PTSW: It's When the Earth Shakes

Over forty folks -- metaphorically bloodied, horribly disappointed, and saddened after working for week on end joyfully, tirelessly for small-r republican values -- met in the little storefront on North Broad Street in Rome that has been our coordinated campaign headquarters. We commiserated as we shared food and drink and hugs. And a bit of inspiration from Kevin Aronhalt, Shawn Harris, Allen Babcock, Bishop Norris Allen, and Vincent Mendes and others. Vincent closed the meeting with this poem. I knew immediately that I would want to share it here. Much thanks to the poet, Chelan Harkin, for permission to do that.

It’s when the earth shakes

And foundations crumble
That our light is called
To rise up.

It’s when everything falls away
And shakes us to the core
And awakens all
Of our hidden ghosts
That we dig deeper to find
Once inaccessible strength.

It’s in times when division is fierce
That we must reach for each other
And hold each other much
Much tighter.

Do not fall away now.
This is the time to rise.
Your light is being summoned.
Your integrity is being tested
That it may stand more tall.

When everything collapses
We must find within us
That which is indomitable.

Rise, and find the strength in your heart.
Rise, and find the strength in each other

Burn through your devastation,
Make it your fuel.

Bring forth your light.
Now is not the time
To be afraid of the dark.

To Kingfisher Trail

Sheila and I took our first walk out the Kingfisher Trail in quite a long time  -- evidently it's been a year at least!

Along the way we were pleased to see work underway to reclaim and restore Unity Point at the confluence of the rivers.

We crossed the South Broad bridge to the Kingfisher Trailhead at the foot of Myrtle Hill.

As we neared the bridge over Silver creek I notices some yellow across the creek between it and the Etowah River. Can you see the Disc Golf target (do they call it a "hole"?) I had not even known a disc golf course was planned there.

From near the old railroad (now foot-) bridge we saw more disc golf stuff and decided to check it out.

This is between the creek and the river.

The course begins on the opposite side of the river.

From the Kingfisher Trail we walked down First Avenue to First Street and took a few minutes to glance around the antique mall there. This combination hobby horse ---

--- high chair was an interesting item

We walked up a very busy Broad Street and enjoyed stopping outside Ford, Gittings, and Kane Jewelers to visit with our friends Jan Fergerson and Fran & Rick Buice. Then we walked on to Schroeders and had a late lunch of Salvador Deli (Sheila) and Crummy Pita (me). While there we got to visit a little with little Annie Mink and her daughter-in-law (and my former student Natalie) and Annie's GRANDCHILD! Oh my. Tempus fugit.

As we neared home we noticed Ben Chaffin playing pin the levee withy his little boy and Murphy the dog. It is so nice to have lots of young families on Avenue A these days. (Not a good picture, but I wanted to remember this scene.

The back yard is over grown, but its nice on the ninth day of November to see the "Jubilee Hibiscus", Miss Huff Lantana, and Knock Out Roses blooming.

Today on the Riverwalk and in the Backyard

Flying debris?!

The Hurricane Helene rains were easy on the Oostanuala basin by comparison to the valleys east of us, but they still scoured the dead limbs from the feeder streams and made great piles against bridges along our rivers, like this mess at the Veterans Memorial Parkway bridge near the stadium.

Sort of temporary fossils? I suppose the leaves got stuck in the silt from the Hurricane Helene rains which inundated parts of the Riverwalk under at least six feet of water. Once the walkway dried I guess the foot traffic and breezes removed the leaves but left their imprints.

Here at the start of the second week in November the "Jubilee Hibiscuses" in my yard are blooming magnificently along with the Miss Huff Lantana.

Anyone who'd like a cutting or two from either is welcome to them before the first frost.

They are both easy to root.

And the Knock-out Roses have decided to bloom again.

Sitting on the porch

I love our old house. Tonight, nervously, hopefully awaiting Election Day, Sheila and I sat for a while on this beautiful fall night in our wicker swing on the front porch enjoying the night and our beloved old home and neighborhood.

Chili and Politics

\It was great to spend some time at the Chilifest this morning at Ridge Ferry Park with Gen. Shawn Harris and several other Democratic friends. Please go vote for this patriot to replace the incumbent Marjorie Taylor Greene. Northwest Georgia deserves better than MTG.

It is such a joy to be part of a joyful hopeful group of patriots working for our republic through a political campaign. I stopped by the Harris HQ to replenish my literature and signs for canvassing -- This time for the area near our old house on Cedar Avenue. -- and saw many folks busily volunteering their time for American ideals. I’m off canvassing again. No slowdown! We’re gonna run through the tape to victory on Tuesday. Vote blue for liberty all the way down the ballot!

Sheila and I had tickets to the rally with Vice President Harris in Atlanta today. We got up, packed up to spend the night tonight with our daughter in Decatur. Even took our things to the car... then we both agreed that at 75 and 77 standing for hours today would be very tiring. We got to hear Vice President Harris in person in Savannah in August. Also, we'll be more use to her volunteering here in Rome. So, we sent our regrets via e-mail and I'm gonna stay in Rome and try to beat yesterday's record for the number of homes canvassed! Won't you come join me? Canvassing is easier and more fun than you might think. At this point it is a "get-out-our-vote" effort. 99% of the homes I'll visit today are folks who support Vice President Harris and Shawn A Harris -- we're just being sure they get themselves and their kin and friends to the polls! MANY of the people I canvassed yesterday THANKED me for reminders about polling places and hours and such! So it's a very rewarding experience.
Just come by the HQ on North Broad and Beth or Josh will set you up. If you want to tag along with me for a few houses to see how I do it, you are welcome.
Let's don't slow down here at the finish -- let's run through the tape to VICTORY for our republic on Tuesday night!
