The Oak Tree's Revenge by John Schulz

John Paul Schulz
is a wonderful creator of stories and has been a contestant in the annual Big Fibbers Contest several times now. The 2020 contest would have been this Saturday but for the story of a novel virus and the world's latest pandemic. So sit back and imagine John telling this tale in the contest.

Gleaning Facebook: Bil & Andy, Not Mr. John This Time

 From John Paul Schulz:

March 5, 2019

Taking the living room to the schools.

Our Ridge and Valley Storytellers group is bringing two of the best story performers in the nation to entertain and teach storytelling at most of the local elementary schools.
Here’s a sweet story that answers a child’s question about a local storyteller. I take care of the flowers for a client who has horses. I go there in the afternoons every now and then to check the flowers and I often run into Hayley who sees to the needs of the horses (physically and psychologically). Haley has two daughters and a son. I’ve watched the daughters, Fern, (5), and Finch, (3), grow into lovely young ladies who always have a greeting for “Mr. John” (that’s me). The girls are delightful. The little boy is too young yet to recognize my brilliance. I’m sure he and I will be good buddies one day.
The other day, I got a message from Hayley on Facebook: “Fern asked if the famous storyteller who is coming to see them at Model Elementary is Mister John.” And here’s the answer:
“Please tell Fern that Mister John will not be one of the story tellers but that Bil Lepp and Andy Irwin will be there to wow them with a story or two. And Fern, I guarantee that you and your friends will truly love the show. You’ll laugh and you’ll go “awwww!” Both of the storytellers will be at Model on Wednesday, March 13. You are in for a treat!”
And for the adults, the Ridge and Valley Storytellers is bringing you a wonderful storytelling festival called “The Big Fibbers Festival” on March 15 and 16. Mark your calendars. Details will follow tomorrow.

Gleaning Facebook: John on Preparing His Fib

John Paul Schulz is getting ready to compete in the 243rd Annual Big Fibbers Contest (during the Big Fibbers Storytelling Festival at the city auditorium here in Rome. He’s got some fierce competition from eleven other fibbers from five states!

Getting ready for the Big Fibbers competition on March 16.
It's a rainy Sunday afternoon and I'm taking myself to school. I've learned some things today.
1. I learned that eight minutes is not a long time to introduce a character, set up a situation, and finish a story--especially if I pause for audience laughter (which I expect to do several times). Do you think the judges should deduct laughter time from total story time? I'm sure they won't.
2. And I have learned that a good short story is not at all the same thing as a script for a good storyteller story. That's what I'm working on mastering. I'm having to change the short story into a script. This concept is new to me.
But I shall persevere. "Never" is the best time to stop learning.

Gleaning Facebook: John Schulz on Andy Offutt Irwin

 February 16, 2019

Enhancing the movable living room.
Andy Offutt Irwin is the second of two champion storytellers who will be coming to Rome, GA for the Big Fibbers Storytelling Festival.
“…peppered with a touch of the Southern balladeer. One of the most sought after performing storytellers in the United States, Andy is a perennial favorite of the Teller-in-Residence Program at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and he has been a Featured Teller at the National Storytelling Festival nine times (as of 2017).”—pirated from the website.
Andy and Bill Lepp (from yesterday’s post) will be featured at the opening night of the Big Fibbers Story Telling Festival. These two men will open your eyes to the art of storytelling—I guarantee it.
The two men will also split up and visit the students who have participated in the in-school storytelling workshops.
The kids are in for a total treat. I can only guess at what effect storytellers of this caliber would have had on a ten-year-old John Schulz.
Mark your calendar for March 15

Judy Blankenship Emerick Can anyone go??

John Paul Schulz It's open to the public. I'll get ticket informaation in the next few days--just letting you know what it's all about right now.

Big Fibbers 2018 -- Three Posts

The first copy of the printed program is off the press... this is getting real. One week and one hour from right now is Opening Night! Y’all come!

Take a peek inside the program here (Click on the program):

From John Schulz Facebook:

Pat Androgynous Cat is obsessed with the shower drain. I'm sure he has a story to tell but we can't understand.
However, our storyteller group has a program in which we send retired teachers and master tellers to 13 schools in the Rome, Georgia area. The program is called "YoungTales Storytelling clubs." The kids love the guidance in storytelling and I'll bet one of them could tell us what the cat's story is.
On Saturday, March 17 at 2:00 in the Charles Parker Center, selected students from this program will tell their stories. The winner will also be a teller at the "Big Fibbers" show that evening. Storytelling for the entire family.
The cat picture was just a fib of mine to get your attention. This post isn't really about cats. Oh, Well. Will I see you there?

Gleaning Facebook: Storytelling Rock Stars

From John Schulz:

After I became a member of the storyteller's guild, I learned that there are some story tellers who are ROCK STARS.
Two of these nationally-known storytellers are Bobby and Sherry Norfolk. They will be performing and sharing in Rome, Ga. for the weekend of March 16-18 for the "Big Fibbers" Story Telling Festival.
These people really put on a show. Have you ever seen a really, really good storyteller perform?
I'm going to put up short daily posts about different aspects of this show. Please like, comment, and share with your friends.

Thanks, John

Gleaning Facebook: Juliana Washington, YoungTales Champ

Juliana Washington (pictured here) of West Central Elementary, Rome, GA, won the 2017 Debby Brown Young Tales Story Competition with a dramatic re-creation of the dialog that resulted between herself, her mom, and others when she got locked out of the house.

Michael Rios of West End Elementary had the audience laughing out loud at his families bi-lingual reactions when he mixed salt instead of sugar in the batch of cookies. Michael took second place.
Emalee Collins of Armuchee Elementary told the hilarious tale of when her mother, as a child, got a pencil eraser stuck up her nose. Emalee was the third place winner.
In all twelve finalists competed last Saturday for the 2017 Debby Brown Young Tales Story Competition during the Big Fibbers Storytelling Festival.
Griffin Girard’s adventures with Uncle Stew and Kenai the dog continued in a very smelly way. Griffin attends Berry College Elementary and Middle School.
Main Elementary’s Corey Chatman and Shailyn Ketterer gave an unusual joint performance speaking alternately.
Other finalists included:
Sara Grace Abernathy, Johnson Elementary
Samuel Fricks, Berry Elementary and Middle School
Matthew Keaton, Naomi Elementary of Walker County
Zack Lester, Montessori School of Rome
Chloe Littlejohn, West End Elementary
Gregory North, Anna K. Davie Elementary
Elijah Webb, Naomi Elementary of Walker County
Debby Brown Young Tales Storytelling Clubs were organized in ten Northwest Georgia schools this year. The clubs each met at least six times to hear stories modeled by professional storytellers Jane Owen Cunningham, Bob Harris (Beverly M. Harris), Mary Elena Rivera Kirk, and/or Terrell Shaw; practice telling folktales; and begin constructing their own personal narratives based on items from their “trouble" lists. At least one young storyteller was chosen from each school for the competition.
The Big Fibber Storytelling Festival, including the Young Tales competition, is presented annually on St. Patrick’s Day weekend by the Ridge & Valley Storytelling Guild with sponsorship from the Chiaha Arts and Crafts Guild, the Coosa Valley Credit Union, the Sara Hightower Regional Library, 100 Black Men of Rome & Northwest Georgia, The Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Chieftains Museum.
