The Granny & GrandShaw 2022 Grand Tour - Getting There

I drove the Honda to Lillian's house.

We are so excited!  We are starting on a five week adventure to visit our three granddaughters and their parents.  First we drove from Rome, Georgia to Decatur, Georgia.

It was great to visit with Waffles.
We visited with Lillian and Jordan and spent the night at their house.

The next morning Lillian drove us through the traffic to the Atlanta Airport.

Lillian drove...

Sheila and I were excited to begin our journey all the way across the country.

We made our way through the Atlanta Airport to reach our airplane.

I love the artwork in the Atlanta airport.

...and the L-o-n-g escalators.

Two very nice strangers agreed to swap their seats with us so that Sheila and I could sit together.

A few hours later we were walking through the San Diego California airport on our way to meet Brannon, and drive to Vista California to see... Clementine, Ruth, and Susannah!

Pat & Granny & Grandshaw are ready for Our Grandgirls!

Pat the Apatosaurus is more than 35 years old now, but he is ready for a visit from Clementine, Ruth, and Susannah. Maybe he's good for a few more good night stories. I treasure memories of reading poems and reading/telling stories to little Brannon and little Lillian in this nutty bed-tent in the eighties and nineties.

And Granny has visited the Twice Is Nice sales buying up clothes for the girls.

And we've got loads of books.

Our girls are coming to Georgia!

A Grandshaw Joy

I had taken my final dose of Paxlovid. My symptoms are almost entirely gone. So Sheila invited me to the living room to watch TV with her after supper. We watched an episode of the early 2000s British crime show "The Last Detective" then enjoyed the President's great speech. Yay! It is absolutely time for the good guys to take the gloves off and face up frankly and calmly but definitely to the reality that our republic is under attack and all small-r republicans must unite against the autocrats, racists, and xenophobes.

After watching a little of the post speech coverage Sheila headed off to other parts and I was working on trying to get that last %^$&^%$ four-letter word in the NYT Spelling Bee --- Sheila who beats me most days has already reached Queen Bee status, as usual.

Then the computer dings and this text message pops up:

Few text messages could have brought more joy to Grandshaw I assure you! I knew the show would be a masterpiece.

As usual when the phone rang and I clicked to open the FaceTime call on my MacBook, up popped the expected chaos. Three excited little girls are running around their den, crawling all over their Mother, cushions on the floor, and the sofa/puppet theater.

The two younger girls ignored the "show" walking/crawling/toddling in and out of the frame while Clementine arranged an assortment of plush  "puppets" from behind the sofa, about half her head showing most of the time... there's a giraffe, a teddy bear, another bear, an alligator, and pig. I cannot possibly explain what went on with those characters, though I think the teddy bear was the antagonist. I can confidently assert that the performers had an excellent time.

After the show I was asked to take a turn telling a story, and of course, "Ghost With One Black Eye" was requested. Our GWOBE is a participatory story. The characters are the five members of the Carlin family. Sound effects and some dialog is supplied by the listeners. As expected an encore performance was requested and given, except I was asked to tell it this time as "The Ghost With Three Black Eyes" and as an grandfather would, I obliged.

How I love these FaceTime calls. It ain't being there but from 2000 miles away it it sure beats nothing.

Here are a few blurry screenshots that might give a feel for the experience.

Later Note: Brannon sent this picture she took of the three girls listening to the story ...

for (the original) Grandshaw

As I endure my quarantine for Covid I am perusing old digital files on my overloaded seven year olf MacBook.

I'm not sure how old Lillian was when she wrote this note to my father who died not quite two years before she was born. She loved to hear me talk about her grandfather. I have told her how much of him I see in her. He would indeed have loved this kid! How he would have loved to have seen one of her dance recitals at Rome City Auditorium in the early nineties. Or any of her plays, from that gosh awful monstrosity they did at Rome Middle to her glorious triumphs in Bye Bye Birdie, Hairspray, and 9 to 5. And I guarantee you, he would have been there to stand with her in troubles too.

We get to celebrate her birthday in just a week's time.

for GrandShaw
I Love you!
I wish that I could talk to you right now!
I wish I could see you!
from Lillian

I Love you!

Gleaning Facebook: Baby Shark!

Residing a continent away from our beloved grandchildren requires ingenuity in gift-giving. For Clementine's first birthday last April we produced a picture book for her called Who Loves Clementine? It was a great success and reminds her of her East Coast family every time she looks at it.

For Christmas we have been working on an amateur video for Clemmie & Ruth (well, really for Clemmie now and Ruthie eventually) Clementine is fascinated with a certain baby carnivorous cartilaginous fish*. She asks the silly song about said fish to be played every time she is strapped into her carseat. She has watched a video version of it likely hundreds of times. So we produced --- well, Lillian produced --- an absolutely ridiculous iPhone video version of the song starring Granny, Grandshaw, and Aunt Lil with her ukulele. I cannot tell you how much fun we have had creating this two-minute bit of insanity! It ended up taking an extra day to complete, but what difference does that make to a one-year-old and a newborn? Lillian just sent the edited final product and Sheila and I have watched it about a dozen times in the last couple of hours.
(Later)
Now that our California family has seen it, I'll allow my Facebook friends to see how truly insane Grandshaw Terrell & Granny Sheila can be....
*trying to avoid copyright difficulties.

Laura Kate Green
That is a beautiful little baby!

Jessica Beckham
Such a sweet pic!

Deborah Lake Dawson
Such a sweet looking baby! Enjoy every minute

Lindy Dugger Cordell
Do you really call him "Grand Shaw"?

Lillian Shaw
Well, Clementine doesn't use words yet

but Grand Shaw is what we ended up calling my grandfather, a nickname courtesy of my older cousin who needed to distinguish between his Grandpa Johnston and his Grand SHAW.

Brian Turner
Yeah, you can decide all you want, but it’s ultimately up to the kid. My dad wanted to be plain ol’ Grandpa but wound up becoming Peepaw

Lindy Dugger Cordell
That is precious. But yeah I know what you mean. Somehow my mom's dad went from Grandpa to GanGan. We had to turn my Pawpaw into "Pawpaw Dan" for Cotton because Mark's dad was already PawPaw and it took precedence since we saw him all the time and that's what all the 42508134980 other grandkids/greatgrandkids called him. Two different names is just confusing when they're really different. My grandmother was both Grandma and Nanny. Which was double weird when all the cousins got together because my mom's mom was also Nanny (and was Nanny twice over before Grandma was Nanny).

Lillian Shaw
Clementine is the first grandbaby, so we'll see what she decides! They're also the far away grandparents since my sister is in California. Her local grandparents are Gamma and Papa. Mom and Dad's chosen grandparent names are Granny and Grand Shaw. And I'm Aunt Lil! Man, this stuff gets confusing!

Terrell Shaw
Except I always thought of it as one word: “Gran’Shaw” or “GrandShaw”.

Faye Layton
Adorable

Ann Gore
Yes he is!

Fred Gould
