Gleaning Facebook: Ohio State.

I s'pose I can claim Ohio as my fourth state. Georgia, of course, 1947-50, 1954-present, but 1950-54, and 1965-69 I lived mostly in Kentucky, and 1969-71, I lived in West Virginia, but while Daddy was in collge we lived in Adams County, Ohio on the weekends. (And I married into a Tallahassee family of course, so add Florida too.)

So way to go, Ohio State.

Condolences to my Alabama forebears and a few Tide fans among my loved ones.

Now, though, on the basis of a week at Lincoln City on the beautiful coast of Oregon: Go Mighty Ducks!

Johnny Cash has a song for you: "I've been everywhere man."

Jenny Sills
Yep it is gonna be a sad Sunday in our class. No Alabama and no Auburn. Condolences Larry and Sam.

First national playoff and no SEC or ACC in the final. Ouch.

Don Rusk
Ohio State is the new SEC North! Mark Mates said when we beat Wisconsin 56 to nothing, it just proved Wisconsin and the Big 10 was just overrated. He also said they were one dimensional so it was easy to stop the run. Yet, Auburn allowed Gordon to run over 200 yards and they are in the great SEC. I won't begin to rub it in about the lowly Buckeyes and their third string quarterback dominating Alabama! Even Mark Mates who hates Ohio State and the Big 10 was impressed.

Uh-oh, Don, you old Yankee devil! Be careful. The South will rise again!

Gleaning Facebook: Dawgs come back.

Great day so far. All the good guys are leading. Noles have a win recorded against the Swamp Lizards. The Jackets are whuppin' the Dawgs. And the Team-Opposing-Alabama is leading in the second quarter.

Wendy Ramsey

And Ohio State pulled out a win against Michigan!

Ruth Pinson

Don't count my Dawgs out yet....17 unanswered points...20-17....there's still hope for those of us who are true UGA alums!!!!

Terrell Shaw

27-24 now -- fun game.

Ruth Pinson

Not Fun!!

Overtime, yuk!

Terrell Shaw

I may need an extra blood pressure pill.

Congrats, Ruth and the Dawgs.

Ruth Pinson

Yea!!!! Dawgs win!!!!! Whew!!!!

Terrell Shaw

Where IS that dislike button?!  As one of my friends said, don't you wish we could have heard Munson call this one?

Ruth Pinson

Yes, we do.

Hal Massie

Ruth, I don't know you, but I like you! Never, ever count the Dogs out! GO DAWGS!!!

Terrell Shaw

Hal, you and Ruth would share some viewpoints beyond your affection for stinky ol' Dawgs- you as a botanist and she as a wonderful 4th grade teacher with an environmental approach to education -- and the best classroom garden around.

Hal Massie

Sounds like my kind of person. My wife is a third grade teacher. We tried once to put in a garden at her school, but it failed due to lack of support from the school and extreme droughts.

By the way, Terrell, I've been meaning to ask you something. In 1993 I attended the state Master Gardener conference, which was held in Rome that year. I stayed in a Berry College dorm, where I fell out of bed and broke my arm on the second day of the conference. Despite the pain (and I really didn't think it was broken), I went on several garden tours in the area, including one of the finest private gardens I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure the lady that built that garden was named Ruth Shaw. Is she a relative of yours? The only thing I can tell you about the location is that the home and garden were high on a ridge and most of the garden was terraced.

 Terrell Shaw

My wonderful mother is Ruth Shaw but not that Ruth Shaw. My Mama didn't live in Rome in 1993 and though she raises a few tomatoes and assorted flowers she has no terraces and has never been a hostess of a garden tour to my knowledge.

You be the referee

I like high school football. And I enjoy trying to prognosticate the games in the AAAA classification here in Georgia, especially this year. Our Rome Wolves came one ref's call from appearing in the championship game at the Georgia Dome next Friday night. Here's the play that cost Rome their chance at the championship. It is the final play of the game. Rome has led all evening and still leads with six seconds to go 17-13. Our opponents, a great Marist team, is trying to score from the three yard line on a fourth down play as time expires. What do you think? Is it a score? The player's knee is touching the ground. His arms are not fully extended. There is no time on the clock. If the ball is short Rome wins. The shadow of the ball touches the goal, but does the ball cross the plane?

The ref, standing on the goalline says he scored. So, regardless of any other reality, he scored.
Marist 19, Rome 17. Ouch.

Now, just in case you are the sort who goes ballistic with missed calls by the refs here is a little test of your own observational skills. Perhaps you may give the refs a bit of a break after you've given a look at this video.
