Smoke on the Mountain, Homecoming

After an emotional day celebrating the life and grieving the death of my sister, Beth, we drove to Tucker for opening night of "Smoke On the Mountain, Homecoming" by Main Street Theater. Lillian who say two songs beautifully at Beth's service yesterday morning had a nice role as Denise in the play last night. It was a community production, and like most community theater had some rough edges, but was very enjoyable. The cast and the audience left happy. (There were no rough edges to our daughter's performance, of course. And I am totally unbiassed.)

Jordan met us there and we took a selfie at intermission...

...then Lillian joined us for another selfie after the curtain call...

I was, emotionally and physically exhausted, so the late drive back would have been a chore with no traffic. As it turned out there was a LONG traffic jam on I-285, and then construction on I-75 near Kennesaw. By the time we got to Cartersville I was miserable with sleepiness and even that close to home decided a cup of coffee -- even bad service station coffee -- was required to get me the last few miles home safely. We pulled into our driveway around 12:30 this morning.

Then tonight we got a text from Lil with this picture. David and Cindy Naglee attended the play tonight and stuck around to congratulate Lillian after curtain call. David was our pastor -- the first time I ever had a pastor younger than myself! --- back in the eighties. Later he was District Superintendent of the Rome District of the United Methodist Church. David was a wonderful pastor, and an outstanding preacher, and a creative administrator as our minister. He also is the only pastor I know of who plays the saw.

Jubilation/The Great Commandment

I have some friends who are concerned that our denomination might be moving away from a Biblical foundation. I suspect my friends are, primarily, thinking of a certain verse in Leviticus. There's a whole lot of Bible after that verse. And there are many "abominations" of that time that few if any still consider such.

I love barbecue pork and I eat it with great relish and not a bit of guilt. I have eaten rabbit. I love lobster and had a delicious plate of crawdads, over pasta with a great sauce, just last week at Henry's Louisiana Grill.

Leviticus tells me I am guilty of abomination.

My reading of the New Testament tells me that God is Love and that I should love God and my neighbors.

There is no record of Jesus ever mentioning sexual orientation. My experience tells me God gave my friends, relatives, and former students a variety of different sexual natures, and some of all sorts are deeply moral, and some of all sorts are not.

I am a preacher's kid. I have heard hundreds of sermons. I attended many Sunday school and Bible school sessions as a child. I passed courses in New Testament, Teachings of Jesus, and Basic Christian Beliefs at a very conservative evangelical college. In adulthood I have attended church services almost every Sunday for many decades. Still I had never read all sixty-six books of the Bible straight through till a couple of years ago. It's a chore --- in all my previous attempts I stalled out during all the repetition before I finished Numbers. This time I stuck with it. There are lots of rules and lots of vengeance and, really, a lot of unpleasantness in the Old Testament. But, wow, when I got to Matthew there was a whole new emphasis! Of course I knew that intellectually. But reading the whole thing straight through I was struck anew, and more forcefully than ever, by the revolutionary nature of the gospel Jesus preached in the New Testament.

You won't find a bunch of "thou-shalt-nots" printed in red in the New Testament. Jesus' red-letter words are just saturated, instead, with love. Jesus did give us two "thou shalts", so basic that they came to be known as the "Great Commandment": Love God with all your heart, soul and mind; and love other people as you love yourself.

In act two of Tom Key and Harry Chapin's wonderful Cotton Patch Gospel musical tune in at 22:00 to hear "jubilation". Whenever I think of the Great Commandment I think of this song.

Ooo-wee.

If you have time to listen to the whole musical, here's the first act.

The divisions in our nation, really in our culture, are mighty obvious. And our congregation is not immune to those divisions. Already some congregations have voted to "disaffiliate" from our denomination, and soon there will likely be some more. It breaks my heart. I pray our congregation will not go down that path. I will not be a part of that. I will stick with the group that prioritizes love. I will stick with the group that welcomes all.

Here is what John Wesley said about disagreements in the church:

“No man can choose for or prescribe to another. Everyone must follow the dictates of his own conscience in sympathy and sincerity. He must be fully persuaded in his own mind and then act according to the best light he has. Nor has any creature the power to constrain another to walk by his own rule. God has given no right to any of the children of men to lord it over the conscience of his brethren. Every wise man will allow other the same liberty of thinking which he desires they should allow him… he bears with those who differ with him… ‘Tis certain, as long as we know in part, all men will not see all things alike. It is the unavoidable consequence of the present weakness and shortness of human understanding that we be of several minds, in religion as in common life. Though we may not think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart though we are not of one mind?” -- John Wesley, founder of Methodism

 From J.J. Walker Seifert's Facebook:

Y'all - if you didn't get to see this show this weekend, I implore you (at the direction of Dolly Parton herself) to go see it next weekend! It is HILARIOUS, the music is amazing - Lillian Shaw's cleavage, I mean --- her VOICE makes it worth it alone.

Gleaning Facebook: The Secret Garden Finale

Today, Sunday February 7, 2016, is your last opportunity to see and hear this production of The Secret Garden. This is one of my very favorite musicals. I wish Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon had collaborated on much more. Their translation of this wonderful classic story into a stage musical is just magical. The words are poetic and the music -- at turns -- stirring, comic, ethereal, and majestic.

Please support bringing these kinds of classics to our community theater stage. Two of my friends who attended last evening reported being brought to tears. Now it IS community theater. You will not find perfection. At least not from ol' Ben Weatherstaff, the gruff but tender-hearted gardener that I get to inhabit one more time. But these players have volunteered a huge percentage of their waking hours outside of work and school for many weeks to bring you this show. Our stage crew, sound and light crew, production staff, and nine piece orchestra are focused on making sure you hear and see every note and every word intended (and as little unintended as possible!).
As a father iI will shamelessly brag that it is a very special privilege for me to share a stage again with one of my two talented daughters. Lillian IS a Yorkshire housemaid from her first entrance to final curtain. You Downton fans will recognise the type. "Martha"'s heart is as big as Lillian's and her voice will resound with humor and comfort (A Fine White Horse") in the first act, and with passionate encouragement for distraught "Mary" in the second ("Hold On")
This is not a show often attempted in community theater. The music is absolutely wonderful, but also difficult. Several of the characters must portray tortured souls, while trying to preserve the spark of humanity. I hope you will see an orphaned little girl and her frightened and emotionally abandoned cousin find new purpose and new life in a garden reborn from their friendship and the love of their Yorkshire servants. And two depressed, sad, selfish, angry brothers brought back from the brink of insanity by the love reborn in that garden.
Y'all come!

Andrew Bressette Really well put Terrell,

Victoria Stanz Abernathy You got wonderful reviews from our special visitor, Rachel Craw, this afternoon who loved to the point of tears during the whole performance last evening. I probably could drive after dark now if I had a trusted vehicle, but I was with you all in spirit. Bravissimo to you all!

Gleaning Facebook: Secret Garden

You have one more weekend to see The Secret Garden. It’s an absolute beautiful musical play, gorgeously translated by Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon from the classic children’s book to the stage. Ours is a community theater production and I don’t promise perfection. You will find the usual array of glitches, abilities and finesse. Even I (Ha!) have managed to flub a line here and there. But I assure you every cast member is doing his best to live his character; every crew member is working to make sure you see and hear everything you should and nothing you shouldn’t, every orchestra member is trying to express every note with beauty and precision. In short everyone involved will put 100% effort toward entertaining you. I think you will enjoy it.

Here I am with my favorite audience member to my right, and my favorite cast member to my left.

Rita Lawler It was wonderful!

Chris Goodwin My wife, daughter, and maw-in-law went on Sunday and loved it!

Gleaning Facebook: The Secret Garden

Lillian Shaw is worth the price of admission for her second act song, "Hold On!" Last night's dress rehearsal was my last opportunity so I snuck around the building, in costume, so I could hear and see her during this showstopper. (Don't tell Brian Sikes!) If I had it to do again I'd have toted my IPhone and taken an illegal video to share. Oh, my! What a powerful performance. This from a totally unbiased observer --- her father.

Tim Dorsey

She is amazing...

Lillian Shaw
