On this day in 1988 a great blessing entered my life. Lillian Shaw you were and are a great joy to your ol’ man. I am so happy for the person you have become. You are thoughtful, talented, kind, and loving. You are wonderful writer, an amazing actress and singer, and, dadgum it, a doggone good dancer too!

I learned that day that the human heart is greatly expandable. My heart was bulging with love for he bookends in this picture just a few minutes before, then like magic it expanded to love the bundle in the middle no less than the other two.

I was so proud of yo' Mama! Lordy that beautiful woman worked to get you here. Labor ain't called that for no reason.

Brannon was so sleepy, and so happy to have a little sister! BUT she did sneeze right in your face to introduce herself.

How I love this photo.

I love you, yes I do, I love you… beyond words.

This delivery room nurse was wonderful. She had also been on duty five years before for the birth of our elder daughter Brannon Shaw! We were glad to see a familiar face.

Time Machine: Washington June 1988

Kaleidoscope students in nation’s capital

Kaleidoscope, the Floyd County schools system’s program for gifted students, sponsored its fourth annual eighth-grade study trip to Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital, in April.

The students spent three full days touring Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institute, the Navy Museum, the Library of Congress, all the major monuments and other places. They spent half an hour on the floor of the House of Representatives talking with Congressman George Darden. Many students listed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Vietnam Memorial and the Washington Cathedral as highlights of the trip.

Students attending, shown above on the steps of the Capitol along with the trip’s chaperones, were: Andrea Barnes, Nicole Range, Laura Foss, Nikki Poulos, Deana Conti, Heaven Hight, Mika Woodall, Melanie Hurst, Ryan Adams, Tim O’Kelley, Doug Brown, Chris Hamley, Shane Ledbetter, John Moore, Mary Boggs, Stacy Stephens, Stephanie Geraldson, Jennifer Smith, Luanne Thomas, Amy Langham, Jennifer Marsh, Jennifer Bojo, Bobby DeHart, Jason Howell, Dipak Patel, Shawn Davis and Burt McCollum.

Terrell's note: The grown-ups include Patsy Lassiter,  Jean Love, Jean Palmer, Terrell Shaw, a couple of folks from Congressman Darden's office, I think. I do not see Anita Stewart or Kathy Steinbruegge -- were they on this trip? 

Here are some details to help us ID as many folks as possible. I will appreciate help!

Mrs. Jean Love was a wonderful teacher and a good friend. She had an amazing storehouse of sports trivia. I knew her peripherally as Connie's mother when I was in high school at West Rome. How interesting to become her friend and fellow teacher years later.

Here are three more teachers. Jean Palmer (in sunglasses), Patsy Lassiter (with the camera) and I think it is Ed Hawkins between them (also in shades).

Y'all will recognize the handsome fellow at the left as me, and Congressman Darden in the tie.

Ah, yes...the trip to Washington that I didn't get to take. Oh, well. At least that means I'm not in this picture.

Yes, this was my group. Not sure why, exactly, I didn't get to go - I can only assume that we didn't have the money for the trip. Oh, well. I got to go the next year with the high school band, so at least I can say I've been to DC.

This is a photo off the web of "The Awakening" that Burt mentioned and that we always veiwed when we took groups to DC. It has since been moved.

 Today was Rachel Jones first Sunday as choir director and accompanist at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Time Machine: Mexico Beach August 1987

We had been here the summer before with Daddy. Now he was gone and we came again. It was bittersweet to be there without him. I am adding these pictures in 2023; they were in a box of pictures that have been stored for several years.  I would welcome more pictures from this trip (and any other family pictures!) from my siblings. 

I love this picture of my youngest sister, Sharlyn Beth Shaw with her daughter Amanda Ruth Hearn. It is so hard to accept (in 2023) that Beth is gone.

Time Machine: Max Cleland

In 1985, the year that I was president of the Floyd County Democratic Association, Secretary of State Max Cleland was kind enough to inscribe a portrait of himself to me. Although he and I are not directly related to my knowledge I think our families have some connections. My Shaws and the Cleland's lived in the Lithonia area. My grandfather's first cousin Lou Shaw married a Cleland. So I suspect our families are connected by marriage at least, but I have not established the link. So, when I was working on my "family tree" I called Max's father, Joseph Hughie Cleland, and had a great time talking with him by phone about our possible family connections. He was a very friendly, articulate, and knowledgeable fellow. We were both pretty sure there was a connection, but did not get it figured out.
