Gleaning Facebook: Bye to Grand Canyon

Saying goodbye to the Grand Canyon of the Colorado after two days of amazement. Over Sheila’s shoulder see the distant zigzag of the Colorado shining in the sunset. The canyon is fogged by rain evaporating in the dry air before it can reach the ground. What a show we got. No photo can capture a significant fraction of the immensity of this grand natural wonder.

Two days of observing a small stretch of this hole in the earth larger than Delaware, watching the light playing with its sheer cliffs, mysterious recesses, shoulders of discarded rubble, ribbon of river. Seeing its elk, deer, coyotes, ravens, bluebirds, chipmunks, and tarantulas, its junipers and pines, its cloudbursts and sunsets, its trails, mules. Hearing expressions of wonder in a world of languages.

What a joy to share these moments, and now memories, with Sheila and our dear friends Russ & Ruth Nelson.

 What were the odds that Brannon would marry a guy whose father is also a storyteller and whose repertoire includes Abiyoyo! I've been telling that story since the sixties. John's dad, Dan Carlin, (and mom, Renate) plan to make it to Rome for the Big Fibbers Festival next March!

Gleaning Facebook: My Little Kingdom

 I think it is time to remind my friends that this is my little Facebook kingdom. Therefore:

Hillary Clinton's political positions may or may not be correct in every instance and I will accept arguments about those. She is, as is very well-documented, a lifelong advocate for moderate to liberal social and economic policies. She is a person of high moral and ethical standards who like me and you is subject to failings in that regard. Political fact-checkers have sometimes found her right, wrong, or somewhere in between - but usually more honest than most.

Take her to task for (as an example) her use of personal e-mail for public work. She and I will admit that was a mistake.

HOWEVER: I am not interested in wasting my time over stupid conspiracy theories that require belief that someone I have watched and admired for decades is Batman's Joker, Harry's Voldemort, Tolkien's Sauron, or a full Biblical Satan. She and I are not murderers, pet abusers, or evil step-parents just because we disagree with you. Get over it.

 Hillary, Jim, Joan, Jeremy, Bo, & Kenya each got at least two early votes this morning. And Amendments 1&3 got two resounding NOs! It has started folks. We had to wait in line at 8 a.m. on Oct 17! Get out and vote!
