Don Choate's Mother

Today I was privileged to be a part of the funeral for Mrs. Newttie Helen Choate, the Mother of my good friend and fellow tenor in the Trinity United Methodist Choir, Don Choate. I sang "In The Garden".

Here is the obituary from Henderson and Sons Funeral Home:

Mrs. Nettie Helen Choate, age 90, of Rome, passed away on June 24, 2014, at a local medical facility. Mrs. Choate was born on January 2, 1924, in Gordon County, Georgia, the daughter of Frank Morris and Ruby Martin Morris.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 72 years, John Henry Choate, sons Don Choate and wife Sarah, and Arthur David Choate and wife Carolyn; granddaughters Natalie Choate Edwards, Beth Choate Grossman and husband Rob, Bonnie Choate Cockrill and husband Chris; great grandchildren John Abernathy, Branson Edwards, Max Cockrill, and Eliana Grossman; great great grandchildren Lexie Abernathy, Summer Bowman, and Kylee Abernathy; brothers Vernon Morris, Arthur Morris and wife Lena, Harold Morris, Roy Morris and wife Virginia, and Thurmon Morris and wife Martha; sisters-in-law Betty Dawson, Glenda Bullard; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Deloris Choate, grandson Jeff Abernathy, great granddaughter Heather Abernathy; brother Charles Morris; sisters Katherine Gault, Viola Mann, and Jeanell Brannon. Educated in the Floyd County Schools, she spent the early part of her married life working in a cotton mill but also made time to serve as a Cub Scout leader, wanting to give her children and the other children in the Shannon community a good life foundation. Always having a strong desire to help others, she chose to become a nurse. Working nights at the cotton mill, she attended nursing c
lasses at Coosa Valley Tech in the daytime, in addition to caring for her three children, and became a licensed practical nurse, working at Floyd Medical Center, Redmond Regional Hospital, Shorter College??s infirmary, and various nursing homes. She was a dedicated nurse who was always praised for how hard she worked and how much she cared for her patients.

She, along with her beloved husband, devoted a lifetime to helping others. Nobody would ever be turned away. They would always make room for one more person at their table, or find one more place for someone to sleep. She always stood taller than her four foot eight inch frame in the eyes of those she helped, whether it be family, friends, patients, or whoever needed her. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Mrs. Choate will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel and Crematory, with the Rev. Scott Lambert and the Rev. Jeff Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel and Crematory, on Friday from 11:00a.m. until the service hour. At other hours, they may be reached at their respective residence.

Pallbearers are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel and Crematory, on Friday at 12:30p.m. and include: Kenneth Mann, Johnny Morris, Ben Morris, Robb McCullough, Jonathan Morris and John Abernathy.

The family expresses gratitude to the caring staff at Riverwood Retirement Center; the dedicated medical personnel at Floyd Medical Center; and Dr. Joseph Herren.

Mr. Terrell of Arrowhead

I am so glad I have lived long enough to get to be Mr. Terrell of Arrowhead!

Today I visited a summer day camp program at Northside Elementary in Cedartown. I took my rodent box with beaver and squirrel mounts, a king snake and two tree frogs. My program probably lasted more than an hour but was broken up into several parts to fit the kindergarten/first grade audience.
One of our activities was to Build A Beaver. The beaver has his special teeth, tail, webbed feet, tough and manipulative front feet, extra eyelids, nose flaps, scent and oil glands, and a beautiful coat. We discussed the many advantages of each of these adaptations. Looks just like a beaver, doesn't he?
For our story I fell back on a sure-fire hit with this age group: "Sody Saleratus", a wonderful American folktale that I set in Armuchee.
And of course everyone enjoyed getting a close-up visit with Doser the King Snake.
They actually pay me to do this.

Gleaning Facebook: Fathers Day

From Lillian Shaw's Facebook:

Happy Father's Day! My connection isn't good enough to post a photo, but I love you so much, and I'm grateful for all you've taught and done for me. Love you, Pops!

Comments

Terrell Shaw
I have wonderful daughters.

Ann Gore

That says something about their father.

From Brannon Shaw's Facebook:

Me and my pop! And all the red headed cousins! Comments

Terrell Shaw
That certainly is a solemn little girl out front. Were you comforting sour-faced Benjamin? This is at FJC (now Ga Highlands) BTW.

Lisette Lewis
I don't think I have ever seen this picture! Thanks for sharing.

Brannon Shaw
With cheeks that big it is hard to smile. They were weighing me down.

Nora Matthews
Brannon Shaw
we are going to see you guys for July 4th!!

Joan Shaw Turrentine
You look deep in thought here!

Laurie Craw
Great picture of a great Daddy and beautiful children.

Andrew Lewis
When was this taken? Was this the summer we did some campaigning for Uncle Terry or had we moved to GA yet?

Terrell Shaw
Brannon and Lisette were born in 83… I'd say this is 85 or maybe 86? My campaign was in 84. What year was Benjamin born?

Andrew Lewis
85

Ruth Baird Shaw
Brannon is looking serious. I am surprised she is not crying because all the other kids in the family are in her Daddy's lap and left no room for her.

Gleaning Facebook: Mama Baird's Apron?

From Carol Shaw Johnston's Facebook:
Ruth Baird Shaw - what's the history for this apron? I was thinking that Mama Baird made it, but then I wasn't sure. Did you make it? Joan, Janice, Terrell, Deborah, Beth, David - do any of you know?

Comments

Janice Shaw Crouse
I know, for sure, that I didn't Don't think I have seen it before; it is beautiful -- great handiwork!

Carol Shaw Johnston
It is made from quilt blocks - machine stitched together, no lining, and the rickrack is machine sewn. I took it to an event the other day where "aprons" was the theme and told everyone my grandmother had made it, but then I started second-guessing myself. I think Mother gave it to me but it was so long ago that I don't remember anything about it. Or maybe Mama Baird gave it to me. I really don't remember. So I figured I'd better see if I can learn the history. And now I'm wondering - maybe Ron's mother gave it to me.

JM Stripling
It's lovely!

Beth Shaw
I'm with Janice. All I know is that I didn't make it. Mama probably knows.

Ruth Baird Shaw
Carol, It looks like something Mama would have made but i do not remember. How long have you had it?

JM Stripling
I so wish that I had some of my grandmother's aprons. I have some of her tatted handkerchiefs and pillow cases but an apron would be even more special.

Carol Shaw Johnston
Ruth Baird Shaw
- I've had it at least since early in Ron's and my marriage. Maybe Mama Baird gave it to me. But I just don't remember. I've always thought it was made by Mama Baird but don't have a clear memory to back it up.

Gleaning Facebook: Fathers Day

In honor of 2016 Fathers Day, almost 30 years after Daddy left us, I'll repost this as my profile to include three of my favorite fathers: me, my Dad, and my baby bro.

I don't want anyone to miss my mother's comment on the creation of these robes below, so I'll copy it here:
"We were living in the beautiful parsonage in Ellijay at the time. I bought the blue material for the boys robes and red fabric for robes for all five girls and for the dolls of the three little girls. (I had a great time sewing them...even made footies for all the girls and the three dolls) I took the material down to a basement room in the church and cut the material...n the long tables there...then sewed them at night after the children had gone to sleep. So no one saw the robes until Christmas morning." Ruth Baird Shaw)
---
This was the Christmas that Mother made matching blue robes for the guys and matching red robes for the dolls, literal and figurative.

Terrell Shaw For Father's Day here's me, my Daddy, & li'l' brother David. Charles Shaw delighted in fatherhood. Is that a fine hat or what?

David Marlin Rains Gangsta [er, for a Methodist]

David Marlin Rains On the other hand, Pops may have been Gangsta for a Methodist.

Ruth Baird Shaw I made these robes for Christmas gifts.

Roger Wade Cool pic Terrell

Terrell Shaw I just noticed I used this same pic last year. I woulda picked a different one if I'd realized that.

Sandy Doughty Ruth, the minute i saw these guys housecoats, I knew that you HAD to have made them...You would have never found these 3 sizes in the same fabric!! BUT, how did you ever find the time?!?!?

Rita Lawler Has the tradition of matching robes gone away. My grand mother made us "twin" ones every year for Christmas

Gleaning Facebook: Stars

I am preserving here (for my old age) images from Carla Bynum Patterson's Facebook of Armuchee's Star Student Haley Patterson's graduation party at El Zarape and her graduation ceremony at Rome's Forum. I was privileged to be honored by Haley as her Star Teacher.

-----------

Nora Matthews
What its this Uncle Terry?

Terrell
Nora, Haley Patterson was Armuchee's Star Student this year and she chose her old fourth grade teacher as her Star Teacher! Wow! That's something we elementary teachers don't expect.
She framed the Star Teacher proclamation from the Georgia House of Reps for me and gave it to me at her graduation dinner. What a sweetheart!

Terrell: Two of my Stars, Haley Patterson (left), Valedictorian and Star Student and Kylee Daitz (right) Valedictorian and Naval Academy appointee. I was so proud for these two. They showed great poise and eloquence (with Anna Young) in addressing their classmates on this beautiful graduation evening.
