Gleaning Facebook: Sorting Old Stuff

My mother, Ruth Baird Shaw, in 1996 at a Baird Family reunion. Photo by Don Baird. I love this picture. And it reminds me a lot of my middle sister, Carol Shaw Johnston..

Happy Birthday to Jamie Fergerson
Jamie, we’ve been dealing with clutter and emptying old boxes. These two clippings, obviously, were never delivered to your mama. If the road to you-know-where is paved with good intentions these are two of my paving stones.

Whoa, this is back in my old North Heights days! I have a lot of fond memories with Mr. Bill Kuhlman!

Jamie Fergerson
Aw, thank you!

Gleaning Facebook: Fantine!

Brannon as the tragic Fantine. Oh, I wish I could be in San Diego for all her performances!

From Brannon Shaw's Facebook:
First dress rehearsal (with audience) as Fantine!

Comments:

Ruth Baird Shaw
Brannon is a beautiful and talented young woman!

Michael J. Burton
Ditto Ruth Shaw

Laurie Craw
This girl needs to move a little closer to home so ALL her admirers can see her performances!

Terrell Shaw
Preach it, Laurie!

Gleaning Facebook: Foolish Frog

Sarah was a student teacher in my classroom and later a co-worker with me at Arrowhead. She had heard me tell "The Foolish Frog" many times I imagine. Today she posted this on Facebook:

From Sarah Anne: Terrell Shaw, look what we found at the Library today!!

Terrell Shaw

Great! It's out of print and sells for a pretty penny online. Did you buy it or check it out? I have been telling that story for about fifty years!

Sarah Anne
Checked it out, remember, ALL the books at the library are yours! Why hoard books at home, they organize, maintain, and rotate all YOUR books for free to you! USE. The. LIBRARY folks! I was tickled to see this! I didn't know I "had" this one!

Samantha Westbrook Lester
ooh. Will you have it still on Wednesday? Zack would love to read it!

Sarah Anne
Yes, Samantha Westbrook Lester, I can bring it to lesson on Wednesday!

Gleaning Facebook: Terrible Accident

Just now this nightmare flashed across my MacBook screen. Please keep this good guy in your prayers as he fights to recover.
In 1965 a bunch of students from Asbury College traveled together to NYC to spend the Christmas holidays "Ringing Bells for the Sallies". Kim Gilson and I ended up being assigned to the Yonkers Salvation Army office along with two girls, including Evie (for whom I fell head-over-heels). Our supervisor was a young woman who moonlighted, without the knowledge of the Sallies, as a bartender. I have fond memories of our crazy - early mornings meeting commuters at stations in Scarsdale or Rye, late mornings and afternoons at various malls, then back to the rail stations for bell-ringing at the afternoon commutes, Then we would explore Manhattan after our duty hours till way too late in a beat-up black station wagon with the red shield of the SA on the side. We'd grab two or three hours of sleep then head back to the commuter stations for the next day of bell-ringing. That was my only time with Kim, but I've enjoyed reconnecting with him through Facebook nearly fifty years later. He became a Methodist minister and I an elementary teacher.

April 23, 2015

Reverend G. Kim Gilson, a Methodist minister for the past four decades, is a father, grandfather, son, brother and the host to two foreign-exchange students. Over the Easter holiday he and the boys headed south for what was supposed to be a relaxing, well-deserved vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC. Just 30 miles shy of their destination, their car was hit and demolished by a drunk driver.
The students sustained minor injuries but are okay.  Unfortunately Kim is not.
He was rushed to a trauma center in Myrtle Beach and has been in the ICU ever since.  Kim has extensive injuries, including 22 broken ribs, fractures of both clavicles and fractures in his upper back.  Kim’s team of doctors expects him to be hospitalized for months. He is more than 500 miles from his home in Wilmington, DE, alone in a hospital bed far from his support system of family, friends and parishioners.
Kim’s road to recovery will be long, painful and expensive. A family member will need to be with him during his hospitalization, his medical bills are piling up and the travel and loss of work have put an incredible strain on his family.

I remember him from college (I was at Asbury College between 1963 and 1967)

 July 1, 2015

from Amy Gilson Fellman
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this update. My Uncle left us to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday. We are all just devastated. He had come so far, and although he still had a long road ahead of him, we all thought he would be with us for many years to come. But, he suffered a heart attack and they could not save him.

Thank you for all of your prayers and support through the last 3 months since the accident. I will never be able to find the words to thank all those who donated to this "GoFundMe" account. Because of all of you and your generosity, we were able to move him back to DE and closer to family and friends a few weeks ago. We are so grateful for this and that our family was able to visit with him often before he went to be with the lord.

Please keep our family in your prayers in the days, weeks and months ahead. Again thank you all for your prayers and support over these last 3 months. It is truly what has and will continue to get us through this very difficult time.

Here is part of his obituary:

Gleaning Facebook: Trinity's Sunrise Service

The first of our four services this morning. About to head out to number 4.

Andi Woodworth
That would be five services, brother! It was a great day - thanks for being there so early!

Terrell Shaw
Now I know that a bunch of you young whippersnappers got together eleven minutes late across the street but I was a part of "only" four services. pastedGraphic.png

[All of you in bluejeans and other unholywear and probably slapping your hands together and singing one-line-jingles-repeated-ad-infinitum. Up starts! ;-)]

Andi Woodworth
Well fair enough - I only actually made it to three services myself, but I taught Sunday School, too. Does that count? And yes, there were blue jeans without holes pastedGraphic.png

And we sang "Christ is Risen" a whole bunch - it was fun!

Terrell Shaw
As long as you promise the jeans were wholly un-holey, I'll let you count SS, and we're even.

Gleaning Facebook: Screentime

Today I shared a chart of advice or rules for screen time for kids. It has disappeared. But I thought I'd keep the comments.

-----------------

 Sarah Anne
How bout no screen time until I say so?! I'm not the type to make colorful chore charts, nor the hovering kind to be SURE she's been crafting for 40 minutes.....I ain't got time for that!

Melanie Collette Babb
These rules can apply at my house when the grandkids are spending the day too. Thanks for posting.

Terrell Shaw
Knowing you Sarah, I think you could have just said,"Terrell, write my response." And I'd have gotten close. And I am in your camp. Limit "screentime" yes, but don't expect that much organization from me pastedGraphic.png

Still one of my major sermons is: the Nature Deficit Syndrone is real and a critical issue in 2015 America. Get 'em out of the virtual world and into the woods and streams and meadows and yards using all five tools God gave 'em.

Peggy Fowler-Casillas
We have no screen time during the week, unless it's for homework and a small handful of educational sites. But that usually translates into no screen time. Weekends we're usually so busy that they don't have time to think about it.

Bob Doster
What happens if the screen is the book?

Gleaning Facebook: Infrastructure

"What investing in the obvious necessary maintaining and improving of America's infrastructure would mean to our economy and job market is obvious. What is not so obvious is why Republicans oppose this investment?" - Howard Smith

Comments:

Anne Edwards Langley
I hope I am not on one of them when it collapses from old age

Deborah Swanson
Republicans (the Politicians leading the way) oppose for one, FEMA, until like GOV. Chris Christie did, decided to get the help his state (locale) needed by kissing up to the President to show him around when the natural disaster hit there. FEMA were first responders to my neighborhood when the 94 Palm Sunday tornado hit my street and neighborhood in Lindale. Never was so glad to see any one while peering out on all that destruction.

Laurie Craw
Totally agree, Jonathan Ingram! Need a moratorium on NEW highway construction starting now and every penny spent on maintenance and making our existing roads safe. There are many state two-lanes that need wider shoulders, dangerous curves straightened and some blind hilltops graded down to eliminate unsafe passing, stripes repainted for night and rain driving, etc. Bridges replaced, yes. But you won't get the developers on board for any of that and they're the ones who drive the legislatures and local governments to plan our transportation spending. Sickening that selfish money interests have such a grip on our governments.
