Halloween weekend is our last weekend of campaigning before the midterms so I feel inspired to make a last minute plea to my fellow Democrats:
I am a bit of a canvassing evangelist.I try to put in a couple of hours canvassing each day -- usually 5-7 pm on weekdays and a bit more on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t come home, as the western sky turns rosy, believing I’ve persuaded a few folks to vote who otherwise might have stayed home. And how? Simply by showing up at their door with a smile, a sincere appeal, and a little reasoning grounded in something I believe deeply: patriotism and our responsibility as citizens of this republic.
And if you're reluctant to canvass because you dread confrontation, let me assure you -- that's pretty rare! At this point we're mostly knocking on doors of folks we think are already on our side. But even when I meet people who strongly support the opposition, almost everyone is polite and often downright friendly. Most are willing to listen, and many seem really happy that someone cared enough to knock on their door and ask for their vote..
That's one of the things I love about canvassing. It reminds me that, despite all our political divisions, there's a lot more goodwill among our neighbors than you'd ever guess from the shouting matches on social media.
So don't underestimate what a smile, a friendly conversation, and a sincere appeal can accomplish. I can't prove how many votes I've helped secure, but I come home most days feeling pretty sure I've made a difference. And that's a good feeling!
I've got a storytelling gig Saturday, but I hope plenty of others will be out knocking on doors that last Saturday before the midterms. And if you'd like to walk along with me this afternoon, Friday, Sunday, or Monday, I'd love the company! Shoot me a PM.
Fired up! Ready to go!
