Gleaning Facebook: Lithographic Plan #6

Folks at Second Methodist Church South, in Rome, Georgia, may have ordered plans from the “Church Extension Annual” of 1879. Lithographic Plan #6 strongly resembles our church’s historic sanctuary built in 1886. Here are details from the annual and pictures of two other churches that likely used those plans, which were adaptable to brick or frame.

A church plate for the Ellsworth Kansas Methodist church that was also likely built with the Lithographic Plate #6 plan from the Church Expansion Annual of 1879.

Gleaning Facebook: Mother's Wall of Pictures

My mother had pictures of all seven of her children framed to match many years ago. The two of Janice and Joan are several years older than the others; the one of David is several years younger. The ones of me, Carol, Debi, and Beth were taken the same day while we were living in Griffin, Georgia. If I remember correctly we walked downtown to have those pictures made, maybe at the Belk-Gallant store? Some these had to be taken at severe angles to avoid drastic reflections and glare off the glass in the frames.

David Baird Shaw is the baby. Before he was born in May of 1958, my father and I painted all of our baby furniture baby blue. Five sisters were enough. It worked. [This is the last of the sibling picture to be taken, perhaps in Ellijay in 61 or 62, or perhaps in Rome in 62 or 63?]

Sharlyn Beth Shaw. I remember this little baby's birth in 1954 in Griffin, Georgia. [This picture was taken the same day as the pictures of Debi, Carol, and Terrell in Griffin, GA about 1956 or 57.]

Deborah Ruth Shaw was born while we were living in the "GI barracks" Wilmore, Kentucky so Daddy could attend Asbury College.  [This picture was taken the same day as the pictures of Beth, Carol, and Terrell in Griffin, GA about 1956 or 57.]

Mary Carol Shaw is closest in age to me and was actually born in a hospital in Atlanta. [This picture was taken the same day as the pictures of Beth, Debi, and Terrell in Griffin, GA about 1956 or 57.]

Charles Terrell Shaw -- Me. [This picture was taken the same day as the pictures of Beth, Debi, and Carol in Griffin, GA about 1956 or 57.]

Lynda Joan Shaw has been the calm, smart center of my siblings. She was born just a few days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. [This picture was taken at about the same time as the photo of Janice, the late forties.]

The leader of our pack and eldest sister Janice Diane Shaw. [This picture was taken at about the same time as the photo of Joan, the late forties.]

Gleaning Facebook: Homemade Playscape

I love it! Let's see... our granddaughter is due on Earth in April. Reckon I can get this set up in our backyard by the time she's the age of this kid? With the levee and the river, what modifications could I make? My place is gonna have to have some attractions if I'm gonna spoil her to the extent I intend.

Gleaning Facebook: Imagine

And then imagine that he bragged on a recording about sexual assault, encouraged Russians to hack John McCain's campaign, and lied over 2000 proven times his first year in office. By the way Michelle would have to be his third wife. And a soft-porn star herself.

AND he wore a brown suit and slightly exaggerated a feature of his signature legislation.

Gleaning Facebook: Porn & Racism

From two posts today:

I can only imagine how outraged his supporters would be if Obama had some of these things going on... they would be singing a completely different tune, which to me, means that they would be two-faced hypocrites. Defending it for one and condemning another. That, in itself explains credibility of their statements and arguments.

Terrell Shaw
Some on the right thought Obama's tan suit was unpresidential.

Hey! At least Trump wears dark suits. Or ill fitting polos and khakis with ugly hats.

They've decided to take away firearms from people who have permission to obtain medical marijuana in Hawaii. So people who legally obtained the guns are having to turn them in to get the medicine the state has legally given them permission to legally purchase and legally use.
One more time, for those in the back: the government is taking away their guns.
Not Obama's government. Not Clinton's government. Trump's.
And the crowd goes... silent?

Terrell Shaw
Wow... got a link?

I wonder if Trump now thinks his porn star "girlfriend" is a, what is his word..."shithole"...just using the president's word. If I have offended you and not the president...well...you are part of the problem.

Chris Ozment
Trump has a long standing reputation of not paying contractors, bankrupting his companies, defaulting on loans, etc. I'm sure there are several dozen other porn stars out there who were promised payment but never received it. At this point, I'm thinking it's a good thing that he has actually paid someone.

Those who have been paying attention have known that #DonnyTheGrabber is a racist for all the years since this...

Howard Smith
In my opinion, Donald Trump IS a racist.

Gleaning Facebook: Kids Deserve An Excited Adult

Teachers are afflicted with human emotions, physical limitations, and foibles as much as anyone else. They will have rotten days. But we have a high calling, and more often than many realize, teachers are the only warm, reasonable, consistant, loving adults in a child's life. Be the adult in your room, but don't forget joy and even silliness.

(The following is from Kids Deserve It by Todd Nesloney and Adam Welcome)

A Woods Colt

Columbus Turner Shaw

Meet my great grandfather Columbus Turner Shaw, and his fiddle. This is a scan right out of my grandmother’s “The Shaw Family” album. She had two others: “The Wilkerson Family” and “Our Family”. Almost every time I visited her for years and years, she and I would get out those three small albums, and we would pour over the pictures as she told me about the relatives I’d never known and  we’d talk about  the much younger images of those I did know.

Every family has scandalous and sad stories that are told quietly and privately as well as the funny ones, and touching ones, and proud ones. As long as my grandfather lived, Mama Shaw was kinda forgetful about Lum’s daddy and his people.

“What was Louisa’s father’s name?” I asked.
“David,” she replied.
“David what?”
“David Shaw.”
"His last name was Shaw?!"
"Un-huh."
“Were she and her husband cousins?”
(pause) "I don’t know?”

After Daddy Shaw was no longer there to overhear, she was willing to spill the beans. Or maybe at sixteen, she thought I was old enough to know.

Lum Shaw has been gone for 60 years and the “shame” is 130 years old or so. Now it’s just a human interest story, so I’ll spill the beans, too.  Y'all are old enough to know.

Lum was part of his father’s “other” family.  He was what we euphemistically might call a “woods colt.” Louisa, the sharecropper’s young daughter had borne several children for a well-to-do landowner.

John Treadwell kept his second family well-housed. Over the years he gave Louisa at least three houses. During our drives around Conyers and Lithonia Mama Shaw pointed all three out to me, but I could show you only one of them now. Before the depression Louisa’s little family owned a fair amount of land right where I-20 crosses from Rockdale to DeKalb County.  His “legitimate” family never recognized the connection. The descendants of the illegal union have spread around the world. At least two have worked in the White House advising presidents. And I can't be too upset about them since I owe my very existence to their misbehavior.

My grandmother said that Lum was embarrassed when he had to fill out some paperwork (was it draft papers?) because he had to admit that he was "illegitimate."

Columbus Turner Shaw kept his father’s picture on the mantle, even after his marriage, but his stubborn beloved, Minnie Ziporah Wood Shaw, would turn it to the wall whenever he left the house.

John Treadwell  (I may have inherited his hairline.)

They were a musical bunch. As you see, Lum played the violin. His daughter Lillie Maud (Named, I suppose after Minnie’s twin sister Maudie) was an expert pianist and the youngest boys, Alton and Alvin played guitar. The eldest of his sons, my grandfather Grady, played trombone.

Minnie and Columbus Shaw with their elder three children,
(l-r) Lewis, Curtis and Grady (my grandfather)

Besides his musical skills Lum was also an expert cabinet-maker and is said to have built furniture for lots of the upper crust folks in Atlanta including at least one governor.

He had a stroke and was an invalid for several years before his death in his seventies. His was the first funeral I ever attended and I remember it vaguely. Minnie lived to 97, but dealt with dementia for a decade or so. She was a small and beautiful old lady, always tidy and with gleaming white well-coifed hair. I sat with her on our back porch in Rome trying to coax some family stories from her. My brother David running in and out of the house kept interrupting us. Each time he did, time and again, Granny Shaw would grin wide and ask with complete innocence and delight, “And who is THIS!”

Louisa Shaw's grave, Shaw Family cemetery, between Lithonia and Conyers, GA:

Louisa Shaw
Born Aug. 31, 1842
Died Feb 26, 1932
She was a kind and affectionate wife, a fond mother, and a friend to all.

I've written about this before here:

Gleaning Facebook: The City Clock at Yellow Door (Plus)

If you see an interesting image of the City Clock, share it at the "Clocktower Collection" Facebook group. Here are a few I've seen recently...

You never know when you are going to see a new image of the City Clock. A truck pulled up beside me at the light at the mall. I whipped out the old iPhone and captured it for posterity.

Some of Ken Blacktop Gentle’s Clocktower prints at Yellow Door.

A Clocktower photo from Yellow Door Art & Antiques

This painting is also at Yellow Door. I am not sure whether this is one of Ken Blacktop Gentle’s or someone else’s

More painted ceramics at Yellow Door Antiques and Art.

Gleaning Facebook: 25th Amendment Time?

In my opinion #PutinAsset gave sufficient cause to invoke the 25th Amendment at 7:49 this evening. How can he still have the support of a third of Americans? This 70-year-old juvenile is the current successor of George Washington? That is obscene.

#TomGraves? #DavidPerdue? #JohnnyIsakson?

Laurie Craw Bragging about "size" again. It's time for women to lead the nuclear powers of the world. They would just brag about their kids and not even think about blowing up the planet..

pastedGraphic.png

Michael J. Burton I hate to say it being an old misogynistic codger. But you may be right.

Laurie Craw There would have to be a whole cultural shift for female leaders to behave differently from the males. So far, female heads of state are not much different from the men when they get in power.

Michael J. Burton Laurie Craw well two female republicans objected to destroying health care

Laurie Craw That was hopeful, for sure.

Frank Norris In my view, both Kim Jong-un and President Trump have the characteristics of megalomaniacs. Yes, a certain amount of ego, use of power, and perhaps even bluster are important to become leaders at a certain level, but extremes hardly ever lead to good.

George Barton missile size is next

George Barton The 25th amendment is only temporary, more like laid off. He can claim he is ok to be president and be approved to return to office by a Republican controlled senate.

Terrell Shaw Have no illusions that Pence will invoke, but he should.

George Barton This is got to be a fake tweet, he does not use the words "very" or "great", and says "please".

Gleaning Facebook: Christmas Eve 2017

Brannon & John portrayed Mary and Joseph in Trinity's 60th annual live nativity on Christmas Eve.

Rhonda Ingram Bramlette
Aww! They look so sweet with the baby Jesus!

pastedGraphic.png

Always loved this. My Quincy was an Angel in this Nativity many years when she was a child. Such a special tradition

I first stood in the Trinity nativity in 1962.

Rita Lawler
What a nice picture to have, especially for this Christmas.

Terrell Shaw
Yes.

Michael J. Burton
Wonder when I first stood

Terrell Shaw
Maybe '58? (the first year)

Michael J. Burton
I’m pretty sure I was in the first one

Terrell Shaw
Michael J. Burton
I’d be surprised if you weren’t.

George Barton
I was in the first one. Have lots of memories. A favorite is when Susie Latimer was Mary, and they had a live milk cow behind her. The cow got nervous with all the cars and lights, and did what upset cows do, she lifted her tail and starting reducing tension for about 30 minutes. Susie got nervous but maintained control.

Terrell Shaw
Just orally interpreted your rich prose to my assembled family (Mother, three sisters, a neice, and Sheila) to the merriment of all!
