A Good Week for the President

On the economy, President Biden, faced with terrible worldwide inflationary pressures, has led the US to the lowest inflation of any of the G7 countries -- inflation still hurts but we ARE doing better than most of the free world. 

In foreign relations, faced with the worst war in Europe since World War Two, President Biden has united the west against the fascist Putin -- the authoritarian that his predecessor praises. 

Yes, Joe Biden is even older than me! Like me he moves slower than he used to. Like me he sometimes stumbles over words that he knows well. But the man knows his stuff. His heart is all-American. He loves the Constitution and he respects the rights of, and seeks ways to work with, even his opposition. He has put together a top notch team throughout the executive branch.

He also has a spine of steel and a heart of gold to go with deep knowledge and sound judgement and great experience hammering out agreements with friends and foes.

I am proud to have been an early supporter of this good man for President and am very proud to support his re-election. That's why I am a tiny part of the thousands of Americans who helped him raise more than twice the campaign donations of the twice-impeached and soon to be thrice-indicted opposition.

 It is so good to see President Biden beginning to get the recognition he deserves for principled, professional, progressive AND bi-partisan leadership (more alliteration than intended!) I love that he has strong FDR/LBJ/BO progressive goals combined with a pragmatic ability to reach across party lines to find compromise. He also has built one of the strongest, most accomplished, intelligent, and diverse executive teams in history. It would be difficult to find another president of my lifetime who has been so successful through two years in office.

A President Speaks Hard Truths to the Nation

Thank you Mr. President for speaking hard but important truth to the nation tonight. You were elected to restore the soul of the nation. The core values of America are under direct threat. Those ideals stated so eloquently in the Declaration and the Preamble.

President Biden is doing what we American people elected him to do. What a blessing it would be to give him a little more support in Congress, but no president has negotiated more successfully with such a tiny majority in the House and a tie in the Senate. I cannot imagine that there is another eligible person in the country who could have accomplished what he has. Thank you Mr. President.

AND tomorrow: the Inflation Reduction bill will be signed. It is the biggest effort to address climate change in history.

I am so proud to have worked for the election of Joe Biden in 2020. 

And for Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. 

And while much of the impatient public wrote him off and the shallow and short-sighted American media reported on the events of the last two years with so little context, our President and our Democratic senators kept plugging along-- working, negotiating, compromising, cooperating.

Think about it, my friends. This president was elected on a platform to, first, restore the soul of our republic after we had endured four years of lies, corruption, and chaos in the presidency; and second, to work for progressive goals in a cooperative and, if possible, bipartisan and compromising tradition of American legislation. He was sworn in less than a month after an attempted coup d'tat and faced an opposition that mostly refused to stand-up to the leader of that attempted overthrow of the Republic despite some of their own admissions of the treachery. He faced the challenge of an economy crippled by pandemic with a tiny margin of majority in the House of Representatives and an exact tie in the Senate. Absolutely NO legislation could be passed without either unanimous support from a very broad range of Democrats in the Senate or else support from at least some Republicans. 

Despite all of that, he is now, without doubt, one of the most successful first-term presidents of all time. While the whole world is encumbered by terrible inflation, labor shortages, a regression toward authoritarianism, and expensive gas as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US is relatively much better. Gas prices are coming down. We are at almost FULL employment. He has managed to pass a slew of his legislative packages despite sometimes despicable stonewalling by Republicans. He has had to make major compromises, of course. It is shameful that Republicans blocked some very popular measures like the regulation of prices for life-saving insulin, for example. But still MAJOR victories for the American people. 

If you, like me, want to see more, then let's give this president a few more Democratic senators and members of Congress. If President Biden had even just a couple more Democratic Senators many lives would be saved and much good could be done.

President Joe Biden was inaugurated 17 months ago. There was no civil transition of power. His predecessor didn't even attend the inauguration. What he inherited was a complete debacle created by a man that was an incompetent buffoon who immediately took all of the credit for the successes of his predecessor whom he had labeled "a complete disaster".

The right embraced Mr. Biden's predecessor along with all of his lies and claims of how he alone had created a robust economy and America's strong standing and respect around the world, pretty much overnight.

They embraced his foul language, his mendacity, his vulgar attacks on anyone who dared to disagree with him, his finger pointing and his excuses, when things didn't work out.

Today, President Joe Biden is working hard to clean up the mess he has inherited. He isn't pointing fingers, making excuses, whining about how badly he is being treated or hurling insults. He is methodically working to fix our problems. He is quietly overcoming the obstacles in his path. He is ignoring the insults, the disrespect, the name calling and the bullying. He is rising above it all to get his work done.

Against formidable opposition at every turn, he is achieving his goals. He is a good man. He is my president and I support him in his endeavors. You can tell a great deal about the worth of a man by how he is perceived by his dog!

Happy independence day Mr. President! NOTHING happens overnight.

What a year!

It's been hard with only a few seats more than the Trumpists in the House and a tie in the Senate.

BUT what a difference a year has made. We have a professional patriotic responsible executive branch. 

Our roads, bridges, and ports are being upgraded. 

More areas of the country have hi-speed broadband. 

More federal judges have been appointed than in any president's first year since 1961. 

We've moved from 2 million people vaccinated to over 200 million people vaccinated. 

95% of kids are back in school. 

Restaurants are up and running again. 

6,400,000 jobs have been created -- the most in one year EVER! 

The average American is taking home more money every month -- in real dollars, even taking inflation into consideration. 

AND speaking of inflation, just imagine, our current big economic dilemma is that the economy has recovered so much that inflation is now a worry. 

Thank you Mr. President and thank you to the people who came out to the polls in RECORD numbers in 2020 to elect President Biden by millions of votes. And especially to Georgia voters who helped elect the President then came back to the polls to elect TWO brilliant, inspiring, and patriotic Democratic US Senators. 

Now we must do it again. 

We must end the gridlock by electing more Democratic senators

Gleaning Facebook: 6,400,000 Jobs!

 In my opinion no President has accomplished more in his first year with such a tiny advantage in Congress. Think of what we can do if we replace some of the Republican obstructionists in the Senate and the Republican extremists, like Marjorie Tayor Greene, in the House! Let’s elect a clear majority of practical, patriotic, Democratic Senators and Representatives to Congress this fall.

Our republic is in real danger.

Sports celebration (Yay Braves!) is tempered tonight by the sad news that racism and authoritarianism have won the day in a squeaker in Virginia. This should be a wake up call to those of us who are small-r republicans, who love the principles of the Declaration and the Constitution, who believe We the People must safeguard our republican institutions. The truth is, of course, that complacency and ignorance are enemies of democracy. When prejudice and fear is played upon by sophisticated computerized "social media" we must care enough to work, give, speak out, and VOTE. The two or three percent of Virginians-who-know-better who stayed home have given the Trumpist Lie new life.

Those hot-under-the-collar about "Critical Race Theory" are ignorant of what it is and have fallen into a sad trap. The Trumpists in Virginia won votes of just enough well-meaning ignoramuses to tip the balance.

Democracy is under attack worldwide, and in my seventies I am watching republicanism crumble dramatically in the land I love. I pray I can live long enough to see this repaired. We MUST fight as hard or harder than we did from 2017-2020 to defeat the authoritarians and their enablers in the (so-called) Republican Party.

Every other issue MUST come second to the one primary issue: Save our republic from the Trumpists.

We have one more year of a VERY scant, VERY philosophically diverse, majority in Congress. We must repair and strengthen the republic's institutions first. That is really all we have majority agreement on. Without Sen. Joe Manchin, who at least agrees that Trump is a traitor and that elections should matter, the Trumpists would have a complete veto on legislation. I sincerely wish he were more open to altering the filibuster and passing more of the Build Back Better agenda that the people voted for in 2020, but politics is the art of the possible.

So to the progressive wing of my party:

Yes, speak out for the fullest possible implementation of the 2020 platform,

BUT do NOT let the perfect stand in the way of the good. The Senate is the Senate. A three vote margin in the House is tiny. Don't let America fall into Trumpist hands again just because we cannot have all we want right now.

And quit being a circular firing squad. 

Joe Biden has been a very bold president. He has actually lived up to his promises despite the disappointment of the narrowed majority in the house and the 50-50 split in the senate. No president with such a slim margin has fought so hard for such a transformational set of legislation. It is not President Biden's job right now (nor ours) to go out and publicly scream against those who support democracy but disagree with us on policy. The president DOES speak out on policy BUT his persuasion must be aimed at a very small group, maybe only two senators, who must be negotiated with, not harassed, to find what part of the program they can support. Then we need to take that for 2021, claim victory -- as we very legitimately can -- and work like hell to elect MORE Democratic senators and congressfolk in 2022!

And because of that choice --- AND because of all of my friends who worked, spoke out, and voted for Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in the January 5 run-off --- we have passed major Covid relief for our hurting nation. If Georgia had failed to elect these men this would NOT have happened. More than two-thirds of Americans approve of our president's efforts to defeat Covid and to ease the burdens of Americans who are hurting financially because of the pandemic. Take away either of these good men and the relief package fails. Halleujah! Please remember this when Senator Warnock is up for a full term next year. He kept his promise.

Who we vote for matters. Character counts.

Francis Ranwez I looked at his page and I think Fred may be a confederate spy who hasn't gotten the word yet. They had drunk the cool aid then, and it took some 16 months after Appomattox before a final peace was signed. They lost then, and as everybody knows, they really lost in 2016 except for Russian help, and of course they lost yet again in 2020 to a fellow they call senile and old. Of course, having your head handed to you by a senile old man doesn't speak well for their cognitively challenged leader. And, of course, the Great Revelation or whatever Ms Green and her QAnon cohorts called the second coming of Trumps escorted by Proud Boy Angels didn't pan out on March 5 either. It made me think of the TV show West Wing.
