The following is an e-mail I received from a friend, Denis Smith, of Ohio. I asked permission to share it here. A million years ago or so, in Bancroft, West Virginia, Denis was my principal at the very beginning of my thirty-three year career in teaching. I was thrilled to reconnect with Denis via Facebook a few years ago. He is an accomplished educator, a clear writer with a sense of humor and a heart, and a kindred spirit. This post illustrates that last point. I have always loved the second picture of the three below, the tearful Graham Jackson playing his accordion as FDR's funeral train leaves Warm Springs, Georgia.
The shameful third picture illustrates so clearly the immaturity and cruelty of Donald Trump that I have used it for that purpose several times during the last few years. That disgusting incident is perhaps the most obvious of the many such occasions that should have ended Trump's campaign.
I had not seen this first picture, but I will not soon forget it. It may take its sad but meaningful place in a gallery that includes the Jackson picture and the photo of toddler John Kennedy Jr. saluting his father's cortege.

The recent passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg brings many memories to mind about her service to the nation. But it was disappointing, yet not surprising, to learn of some of the vicious right-wing comments that have been made as a way to demonize the late jurist and thus lessen her accomplishments as a champion of justice for all, including, of course women, who make up the majority of the population in this country. In the many tributes offered, those who were not familiar with her background learned that for one period of her life, she was an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union. And in spite of the shameless attacks on her, fair-minded persons realize that she expanded civil liberties for all in this nation.
Wow. Alone on A Limb lives. I didn't realize that you were still posting here. I was thinking that you were only doing Facebook. I've looked quickly through the posts of the last couple of months. Lot's of interesting articles. I'll take a better look. I'll let weeks go by without posting on my website, but right now I am more active in this political season. I've been posting since 2007 — maybe 10-20 visitors each day hitting on articles I'd almost forgotten about. A website gathers an interesting collections of thoughts and I find many keep repeating my POV amazingly consistently. I've enjoyed following on Facebook your travels and visits with you grandkids. I keep hearing that Ohio is in play this election — and Georgia too! — I hope I don't go crazy before it is all over. Say "Hi" to you Mom for me.
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful to get a comment that is not spam! Thanks, Mike.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the old Limb is poorly read, but lately I've been trying to revive it a bit, just as a place to organize my thoughts a little. Facebook is such a jumble. I've even intended (and made a tentative start) to go back and gather and edit and better order some of my Facebook posts here. But even when I link these posts to Facebook few of my friends ever follow me over here. Oh well.
As of today, believe it or not, Nate Silver ---https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-election-forecast/
--- has, for the moment, placed Ohio in the Biden column, leaving Georgia with the slimmest Trump margin of any state where Trump has the lead. How about that! Still 38 days of voting left, but I'd rather be ahead in Ohio than behind even if it's only by a point.
Sheila and I and Mother speak of you often. You orta drive down again soon. We can mask up and stay safe I imagine.
Yes, I followed your link here. This is a very good looking site. I need to re-do mine. I bought a book for you yesterday at the flea market. It is brand new and seems high quality — "A Treasury of North American FOLK TALES," 375 pages, Compiled and Annotated by Catherine Peck — and, what a deal, it cost just $1. I'm reading some of the selections and some are very clever. Anyway — when I see you again — there is a new book in your future. I'm thinking you may already own a copy, but you can pass it on to someone who would enjoy having it. Thanks for the invite. I'd love to come back to Rome — sometime, maybe in the not too distant future, whenever it is best for you. I now have a reliable car!

ReplyDeleteYes, come see us soon! I don't think I have that book. Yay! I love a bargain.
ReplyDeleteRemember you are an "Alone On A Limb" contributor, so you can always cross post here, especially when you have a post that might be of interest beyond DaytonOS. :-)
