Gleaning Facebook: Women Can Help Us Wake

-----------

When this nightmare is over and our republic is restored, my children and grandchildren will know that I stood up to Trump and his enablers. Will yours?
Fight back. Speak out. Vote, my friends. Vote Democratic all the way down the ballot. Find other voters. Our nation needs you. It is up to each generation to pass a functioning republic on to the next.

Gleaning Facebook: Our Garden Gnome

Our favorite garden gnome readies for the Halloween season

Gleaning Facebook: My Triplets

I took a nice long, brisk walk along the Riverwalk, through the Town Green, down Broad, up to the City Clock and back. When I got to the green I heard my name and a pair of nice young ladies came across the grass toward me. I turned off the podcast (with hearing aids attached to my iPhone by a form of magic called bluetooth I actually DO have voices in my head) and one introduced herself as Emily Presley, “Allyssa’s sister,” she said. It took me a few awkward exchanges to clear the cobwebs and realize that this was one of my triplets! And they were all three there on the Town Green. Alyssa was in my homeroom, but all three had science and social studies from me. In a career that began in 1969 I do not remember another set of triplets who all were in my classes. Aaron isn’t sure of his plans after graduation next year but he’s thinking of studying graphic design; Allyssa and Emily are thinking of being teachers(!) and hope to attend GHC for their first two years of college. What a great trio of kids and what a joy for this old teacher to run into them this afternoon!

When I went by my mother's house tonight I told her about seeing Emily, Alyssa, and Aaron and showed her the picture. She asked me to send her the picture. I suggested I might just post it on Facebook. Mother said yes, and tell everyone she told me to do it! So here it is.

Gleaning Facebook: Stacey Abrams Rally at Schroeders

Rushed home from work to try to make it to hear Stacey Abrams at Schroeder’s. I walked from home and actually passed Stacey’s bus at the Fifth Avenue intersection with Broad Street and made it on time.

What an amazing, articulate, sincere, brilliant , priincipled but pragmatic governor she will make. There will be few on the other side who will vote for their nominee with anything approaching the enthusiasm that I feel for my nominee. No lesser-of-two-evils vote for me. I am thrilled to have such an awesome candidate to support. And that goes for almost the whole Democratic ticket. Charlie Bailey, who also spoke this afternoon, is a prime example. He would be head and shoulders above the opposition for Attorney General on experience alone!

Though I was at the back, I was not far from the other door, where soon our magnificent nominee waited for her introduction.

Sheila was much closer to the stage and snapped this one. What an inspiring leader. If we can elect her, she will not only be a great leader for Georgia, she will represent the Empire State of the South on the national and world stage with an articulate and principled voice.

And I think especially of all the beloved little Georgia girls I have taught since 1971! What an inspiration to all of them and especially to the ones of color! We can elect, not only an outstanding intellect and principled leader, but as a bonus she will be the first Georgia Governor who is a woman and the first Georgia governor who is black!

There were two or three from the opposition in the crowd and one interrupted with a shouted accusatory question about Stacey's financial difficulties --- I will be happy to have a governor who has experience with the kinds of financial difficulties I and many other citizens have faced!. Stacey handled the confrontation with grace and answered frankly and completely.

After the Stacey Abrams rally, Sheila and walked over to the courthouse and voted for the entire Democratic ticket --- especially proud to cast votes for Sarah Riggs Amico, John Barrow, Charlie Bailey, Evan Ross, John Burnette, and, of course, Stacey Abrams!

I am very glad I made it when I did. Had aI been a minute later I don't believe I would have gotten in. I sqeezed about three feet into the courtyard. I do not know how many were behind me in the long hallway or out on the street. I doubt there has ever been a larger crowd at Schroeder's Courtyard!

We asked Marsha Yancey Atkins to snap a pic of us before the Stacey AbramsSarah Riggs Amico banner.

Gleaning Facebook: Chieftains Storytelling

I’ve had a great time telling stories this week: Sunday at a neighborhood party in Maplewood; for a homeschool group at Chieftains Museum early this afternoon; and with preschoolers at a Special RESA program at Anna K. Davie Elementary late this afternoon. At Chieftains I was pleased to see my high school friend Alice Jeffries Keel in the audience with her grandchild. Alice and I were the West Rome High co-hosts for the Highlighters (?) radio show on WIYN back in 1964-65!

Gleaning Facebook: WindSong Condos Are Gone

For my family: this screenshot from a video in the NYTimes is the clearest picture I’ve seen of the ruins of the Windsong condos where we vacationed so many times. It is the rubble just above the word “landfall”.

Gleaning Facebook: 27 Years in the making...

I've been looking forward to this day for twenty-seven years! We didn't have a clear idea of its final location or form, but Jim Dixon and I in 1991 first discussed recovering and erecting the old arch in a public spot. If I can sneak away from the Chili Cook-Off for a few minutes I'll be there.

Gleaning Facebook: A Fine Shiner!

No, Lillian did not use stage make up on me. This is a real shiner. No it wasn’t Sheila. I know after 47 years when to duck. Turns out, despite my reputation, my noggin is not harder’n pavement. It was my second losing altercation with asphalt of 2018. And no, not a drop of demon rum was involved. I just need to watch out what I do with my feet.

Here's a bit of the progression of a black eye...

Gleaning Facebook: Donald Davis NSF 2018

Donald was in prime form as he took us Back to School and included parts of some of his greatest hits... including Miss Daisy! A wonderful performance.

Corinne Stavish introduces Donald Davis in the first event of the 46th annual National Storytelling Festival.

Clare Lacey Gilliland:

I love Donald Davis. I have 3 of his tapes that I bought in Jonesborough 35 years ago at the Stortytelling Festival.

The Virginia Creeper Trail

We had a marvelous time today biking on the Virginia Creeper National Trail. 17 miles almost all downhill.

Lillian Shaw: Mom, you look gorgeous! Dad...well. Sheila Shaw:Wide-eyed? Or wild-eyed?

Gleaning Facebook: Asphalt

No, Lillian did not use stage make up on me. This is a real shiner. No it wasn’t Sheila. I know after 47 years when to duck. Turns out, despite my reputation, my noggin is not harder’n pavement. It was my second losing altercation with asphalt of 2018. And no, not a drop of demon rum was involved. I just need to watch out what I do with my feet.

I got lots of responses to this one:

Tersi Bendiburg
Oh, am so very sorry.

Nelda Myers Hartline
My .goodness

Sandra Pride
It's a beauty. Do keep an eye out for a concussion like the man said. Clementine won't like it if you don't take care of yourself.

Melanie Collette Babb
Wow ouch!

Tina Brinson
Ouch!

Susan Barnes Babb
That's gonna look far worse tomorrow!

Terrell Shaw
You were right.

Susan Barnes Babb
'Twas the voice of experience!

Janice Richardson
Feel better soon!

Deborah Lake Dawson
Happened to me, worse! Went to rescue my dog and scrapped the downhill driveway! Not a pretty site.Reply4y

Donald Murdock
Dude, gotta watch your step! You’re much too honest for a veteran story teller, though. Need to make up something cool to go with the shiner. You were side-stepping a wild hog, or some such thing!

Gary Sarah Pace
Can identify.

Brannon Shaw
Yikes Dad! Watch out!

Nancy Johal Singh
It does look like purple eye shadow....hope it heals fast.

Lillian Shaw
Dad!!! Be careful!

Tony Pope
Well...there's a new story for November!

Frank Norris
Yikes! Sorry. / So, if it's not Sheila, and not because of what you drank, and not the fault of the asphalt pavement, are you saying that it's your own a**-fault?

Terrell Shaw
You win the prize so far, Frank! It was definitely an a**'s Phalt.

Bryant Steele
Come over and look at my elbow. It's what my face would have looked like if I hadn't been able to twist as I fell.
Seriously, mend soon. Be well.

Charlie Hehn
Ooooooh, that's going to spread.

Fred Gould
Please behave yourself.

Terrell Shaw
Old dogs, new tricks and all that!

Chris Ann Buff
Ouch!

Rhonda Ingram Bramlette
That is an impressive shiner! Hope you feel better soon!

Michael J. Burton
Darn I need a script to match this look.

Mike Bock
ouch !

Diane Loyd Gage
Ouch!

Lizabeth Jolly
So sorry—— I hope there is not a lot of pain involved

Amanda Lawrence

Ann Perkins Niemeier

Gary Greene

CeCe Baker
Don't we all . . .

Marilyn Murdock McLean
Ouch!!

John Countryman
We're more susceptible to falls now. Be careful out there!

1f642.png

Dona Ward
I told you not to try any more cartwheels!

Anita Stewart
Did you see the pavement coming your way?

Terrell Shaw
It was a dastardly sneak attack; it was just lying there in wait.

Carolyn McGuiness
Poor baby

Larry England
I got a big bump the size of a golf ball on my ankle from a fall last week but someone tripped me. So I can blame outside parties. Get well.

Terrell Shaw
Back at you! Ouch.

John Paul Schulz
old people like you need to be more careful.

Terrell Shaw
Look old man, you’re older’n me!!!!

John Paul Schulz
nevertheless......

Andy McCullough
Glad you are okay but take care Cuz'n Terry!

Ruth Pinson
Ow! I'm so sorry!!!!

Faye Layton
Sorry! As a "story teller", invent a more intriguing tale. You could have been injured in some type of heroic action!

Terrell Shaw
The real story: I had to step into a roadhouse brawl to save Sheila. It was a disagreement between subject and verb. You know how English majors is.

1f609.png

Faye Layton
How brave! The subject always agrees with the verb!

Laurie Craw
If you like that "smoky-eyes" look, just use eye shadow. It doesn't hurt at all.
