The first is one of my favorite family pictures. I suspect this was taken in Porterdale, Georgia.
If any one knows for sure, please let me know. My great-great-grandmother and her cow:
Mary's husband, Nathan, had enrolled in the First Georgia Cavalry, if I remember correctly, at the age of 16, during the War Between the States. Here he is much later, again probably in Porterdale GA:
Nathan Robert Wood
If you are a descendant of Nathan's son-in-law, Columbus Turner Shaw, I hope you will consider a donation toward the cleaning and renovation of the little Shaw Family Cemetery near Lithonia, Ga. It is in terrible condition. Call or e-mail me and I will put you in touch with our two cousins who have taken charge of the clean-up.
This posted way too fast. I'll correct any errors when I find them.

Hi Mr. Shaw,
ReplyDeleteI guess we're cousins. I too descend from Nathan and Mary Wood and am curious about their lives. Is everything you know about them published here? I've been able to see his pension application on the Secretary of State's website, along with a couple of pictures posted to ancestry.com, but I want to know more. I'm curious. It's really amazing that I've even seen their pictures at all, as prior to the age of computers I surely wouldn't have been so lucky, but now I've been spoiled and long for more!
Thank you for any information that you are able to provide.
Sincerely,
A Grateful Wood Cousin
So good to hear from you. I used to love to sit with my grandmother Lillian Shaw and look through her photo albums as she talked about the folks in them. She knew both Mary and Nathan and told me a little about them, though what I have here is most of what I remember. My e-mail address is terrellshaw (at) me (dot) com. "Friend" me on Facebook or send an e-mail. I'll try to find more to share.
