Gleaning Facebook: Aunt Inez

Today we lost the last of the Snell sisters, Inez Snell Layton. Aunt Inez was the youngest of Mavis Snell Matthews’ sisters. Mavis was my beloved mother-in law, or as one of my storytelling friends says it, “mother-in-love”. Here is a picture of Inez I took a couple of years ago on her 93rd birthday with a picture of her mother in similar pose on her 93rd. The wonderful woman in the black and white picture, Annie Brannon Snell, is the namesake of our eldest daughter, Brannon Shaw . Aunt Inez was a kind, talented , and intelligent woman. Like her older sisters, Ethel and Mavis, she was a nurse. Like her sisters she accepted me as an integral part of her family from the day I married Sheila Matthews Shaw. I am truly blessed by my extended Matthews/Snell family. I will miss Inez as I do Ethel, Mavis, Dot, and Rose. I have been a blessed man.

Savor the peace and calm that comes with this moment. In spite of the grief, it's special.

 Steve Craw has been the most stalwart advocate for the cabin. He has been chair of the cabin committee for years and never gave up on finding a way to preserve our heritage and honor the heritage of native Americans. He put his muscle where his mouth is by doing more arduous , physical work than anyone by removing the layers and layers of materials obscuring the cabin and hewing logs with a foot adze. Unbelievable stamina in a 70 year old. Kudos friend for working so hard and long to make your vision a reality .

Gleaning Facebook: The Burton Family Dancers

 I wonder how many dance recitals Sheila and I have attended over the years. Tonight we went to Joanne Collier’s recital at the city auditorium where we watched Gola, Keila, & Ginger dance in the seventies and eighties. Tonight we watched Carolyn Smyth wow the audience with grace and poise. And her pretty face is reminiscent of her namesake and our dear late friend. How Carolyn Burton would have enjoyed watching her grandchild in that recital tonight. Young Carolyn’s cousin Allie will dance in a recital in Dallas next week! And Sasha had a recital earlier today in Carrollton. We can't make them all!

Gleaning Facebook: Wildflowers of Georgia

 Couldn't believe my eyes when my copy of Linda Chafin's new book landed on the front porch this morning. I ordered it shortly after discovering it existed a few minutes before midnight last Tuesday. It is a gorgeous book.

First it is adorned with one of my favorites, Catesby's Trillium which you can find along our Armuchee Elementary School Nature Trail as well as at Arrowhead Environmental Education Center. The book is written in an informal style comfortable to a rank amateur wildflower enthusiast like myself. The pictures are gorgeous, as you would expect since most of them were taken by Hugh and Carol Nourse. Right there on the first page is a thank you to our close friends Richard T. Ware and Teresa A Ware. A quick look at the credits finds the names of several of my "Facebook friends" or Ga. Botanical acquaintances.

I already own Linda's Field Guide to the Rare Plants of Georgia, and several books that use the Nourses' wonderful photographs including the huge Guide to the Natural Environments of Georgia.

I highly recommend Linda Chafin's new book to any one in Georgia or surrounding states who enjoys walking in the woods and who wants to greet their wildflower friends by name.

The well-feathered Barn Swallow nest on the front porch at Arrowhead is home to four speckled eggs as of Tuesday.

 

I may have interrupted this female Spiny Soft-shelled Turtle as she was preparing to lay some eggs right in the middle of the drive. After our extended photo shoot she ambled off the road and back to the lake.

 I miss my grandmothers on this Mother's Day. This is Lillian Ophelia Wilkerson Shaw, my Daddy's Mama. She was one tough cookie. Shge lost her own mother when she was only nine. She married at 16 and raised five rambuncious sons to be fine men. I loved the week I spent with her every summer as a kid. She worked me hard, but I still had a great time.

I know I have a picture on this computer,of Ieula Ann Dick Baird my mother;s mother. She had eleven children. Two died young, one as a baby and one as a three-year-old. The others all grew up to be my aunts or uncles, except the youngest who is now my mother! Ieula Baird was a big influence on me. She was kind, sincere, deeply religious, very loving. I wish I could find that picture!

It's time we laid to rest that "self-made man" myth that Republicans keep alive to justify their "small government" agenda.. Rural electrification was coming, government or not.
Ports, highways, airports, and infrastructure are often built and expanded by the use of local option taxes. People and corporations filter money through government so it can make sure the right back gets scratched when the construction contracts are awarded.

I'm reading a history classic, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, and Donald Trump's campaign is goose-stepping a parallel path as Hitler's Nazi election strategy. (Substitute Immigrants and Hispanics for Jews, come up with a "we were stabbed in the back" message, target the votes of the lower middle class, shout all opponents down, etc) It's eerie reading this and watching the campaign, all the more as the author, William Shirer, was a news correspondent in Berlin from the earliest beginning of National Socialism to 1940. He saw it all.
