145 main Street, Milstead
145 Main Street, Milstead (now Conyers) Georgia
This little mill town house is so precious to my memories. My paternal grandfather and grandmother lived at 145 Main Street throughout my childhood. After Mama Shaw died in 1993 Milstead Baptist Church bought the house. Every time I look at this picture I think of more memories associated with the trees, the bushes, the garage/workshop, the clotheslines, the alley behind the house, the sidewalk in front, each of the rooms. I remember the dirt floor of the garage with its doodlebug funnels. I remember the Christmas decorations on the porch. Daddy Shaw's backrubs there. Trouble the Boston terrier chasing sticks in the yard. Raking the yard. Studebakers parked on the two narrow strips of concrete that led to the garage. Walking from that porch down Main to Daddy Shaw's barber shop.
I took this screen shot from the Milstead Baptist Church webpage.

PTSW: Beyond Stars
It is mind boggling to me to contemplate the universe. My brain wants to explode and even now I can retrieve the feelings of panic I felt as child when I first tried to imagine beyond the stars. It is also mind boggling to realize that I was contemlating these things in about 1952.

Beyond Stars
A Prose Poem
Before seatbelts, infant carseats, and airbags, when I could sometimes drive in my Daddy's lap or ride with the security of his wing my only restraint, Mama and my sisters crowded with us into the long black 'fifty Chevy the one with the wide shelf under a sloping back window for the long drive to Kentucky.
We sang, laughed, argued and slept for three hundred winding miles through the mountains to the bluegrass.
As the sun set on our long winter drive, the mountains bled red ice where the road cut the steep slopes. Then the dark wrapped our speeding little world up tight and we slept: the baby in Mama's arms; the toddler in the crook of Daddy's wing; my two older sisters on opposite sides of the big back seat, legs meshed in the middle; my next younger sister curled in a blanket with her arms folded across the warm hump in the floor; and my full length wedged into a private half-cocoon in the back window; young cheek pressed against the waking cold glass.
I didn't look up until I could arrange myself comfortably, a wadded jacket pillow under my head. I closed my eyes; turned them toward the black sky; let them adjust to dark; then peeked into the universe of stars.
A quarter inch of safety glass shielded me from a billion distant hellfires in the wide sky. I refused to avoid the terrible sight. I determined to think beyond the farthest, tiniest light. Then beyond that as far again, and again and beyond that, and beyond that. To the mind of God. And beyond that.
As my head inflated with the terrible expansion of thought I tore my tiny face from the window to the silhouette of my parents against the headlighted pavement rolling toward us and pulled my family around me like a blanket against a private winter.
Later, home in the top bunk, I waked, terrified by a dream of the Milky Way racing toward me like lighted pavement in the dark. I stumbled to my father's lap. He put down the book and held me and I slept.
Who will hold me now?

Gleaning Facebook: Today's GOP
To protect them and the republic he loved from authoritarians, 78 years ago, my father left the young wife and two little daughters he loved with all his heart to risk his life half way around the world on tiny islands in the middle of the anything-but-pacific-ocean. The least I can do is speak out and vote to stop the authoritarians at home.
"Stating plainly that one of America’s two major parties, the party putatively devoted to advancing the ideas and ideals of conservatism, has now fallen into autocratic disrepute is unnerving for a magazine committed to being, in the words of our founding manifesto, 'of no party or clique.' Criticism of the Republican Party does not suggest an axiomatic endorsement of the Democratic Party, its leaders and policies," Jeffrey Goldberg writes. "Substantive, even caustic, critiques can of course be made up and down the Democratic line. But avoiding partisan entanglement does not mean that we must turn away from the obvious. The leaders of the Republican Party—the soul-blighted Donald Trump and the satraps and lackeys who abet his nefarious behavior—are attempting to destroy the foundations of American democracy. This must be stated clearly, and repeatedly." - The Atlantic

Storytelling for the Little Guys
Here are some pics from two performances for kids.
The first few are from a weekend library appearance where I showed off a baby alligator and told my version of Ed Stivender's version of David Holt's version of Joel Chandler Harris's version of a creation story about how come baby aligators are colored differnetly from their parents.
The other is from a performance of my own creation story "Why Mr. Anole Has Two Outfits" for a daycare and home school group
I'd love to come perform for your school class, scout group, civic club, senior home, pre-school, library, church group, ... shoot just about any group of any age anywhere in Northwest Georgia.

The Continuing Attempted Coup
The Bipartisan January Sixth Committee is very busy. Over 400 witnesses! Today the former vice president's staff lawyer, Greg Jacobs, testified for many hours. Described as a patriot by the committee chairman, it is said that he memorialized his contemporary recollections of the meeting on January 5th when Trump and his jackleg lawyers tried to convince Pence to try to overthrow the election. Trump admitted as much in a "rally" only a day or so ago.
How there can be a patriotic American, who is reasonably intelligent and moderately aware, who still supports the treachery of the former president I will never understand.

Storytelling with My Generation, and Even Older
Since late last summer I have regularly done storytelling at a memory care/ retirement facility. Each Tuesday I tell stories in thirty minute segments, to each of three group of seniors who have varying degrees of memory or physical disabilities. I thoroughly enjoy myself. One of the interesting things about these visits is that, after sixty years in Rome, many of these people are folks I have been acquainted with over the years: business folk, fellow teachers, fellow church members, etc.
Today I had company. Ali, a Berry College student who is a Bonner Program intern with us at Arrowhead accompanied and took some pictures. Ali not only helps keep our animals fed and healthy, and the center clean, she also goes above and beyond -- to the extent of writing a grant proposal that would give us a new alligator enclosure. Her buddy, Bethany, was not able to go with us today but she also goes above and beyond the call. We at Arrowhead are very thankful for all the ways the Bonner Program at Berry College has assisted Arrowhead over the last nine years!
Here are a few of the pictures Ali took of my gyrations today as I told the story of "Why Mr. Anole Has Two Outfits". I can tell what I'm saying in a few of the pictures. I'll give those a cutline. Ali avoided photographing residents to protect their privacy.
Anole tried to use a snakeskin as a costume, pulling it over his head...
The Barred Owl way up in the Sweetgum tree listens to Anole's complaints.
Anole is waiting, waiting, waiting for prey...
Ms. Anole sees her husband coming down the road in another silly outfit...
The Barred Owl has a very distinctive call.
Showing off Mr. Anole in his brown outfit.
Mr. Anole flaps his front legs to show off his new feathers...
Walking in a turtle shell turns out to be very awkward for Anole.
