Gleaning Facebook: Tellabration 2018

From the event page on Facebook:

Welcome to Northwest Georgia’s TELLABRATION!™, a night of storytelling celebrated here and world-wide on or about the third Saturday in November.
Guilds and storytelling enthusiasts all around the globe will share their storytelling talents in concerts held in cities and towns to celebrate the art of storytelling. TELLABRATION!™ brings together some of each area’s storytellers, to delight, captivate, and mesmerize audiences with their stories. It creates a network of storytelling enthusiasts bonded together in spirit at the same time and on the same weekend.
These five civic leaders of Rome are well-known for their storytelling -- in their chosen fields more than in “
storytelling” per se: Bill Davies, Baptist pastor; Clementine Slack counselor and college professor; Ray Atkins, award-winning novelist; Nanci McNeil Hicks, Methosdist pastor; and Severo Avila, columnist and reporter.
No admission, but please bring a potluck dish to share. We will eat at 7 and begin the stories at about 7:30.

From the Rome News-Tribune, November 15, 2018

A night of storytelling takes place Saturday with the annual Tellabration event.

Guilds and storytelling enthusiasts around the world share their storytelling talents on the third Saturday in November and Rome is no different.

The Ridge & Valley Storytelling Guild in cooperation with the National Storytelling Network is sponsoring its own Tellabration event at Trinity United Methodist Church’s Mobley Fellowship Hall located at 606 Turner McCall Blvd.

The event will be a pot luck supper and stories beginning at 7 p.m.

The program will feature guest storytellers who are well known in the Rome community sharing everything from personal anecdotes to tall tales and everything in between. They are award-winning novelist Raymond Atkins; newspaper columnist and editor Severo Avila; former associate pastor at First Baptist Church Bill Davies; pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church Rev. Nanci McNiel Hicks and educator Dr. Clemontene Slack.

Admission is free but guests are asked to bring a potluck dish to share. Dinner will begin at 7 p.m. and stories will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Gleaning Facebook: Storytelling News

I had a great time telling tales and talking about storytelling this morning with one of the drama classes at Coosa High. One more go-around this afternoon.

For our Ridge & Valley Tellers: There is no August meeting scheduled. We have a plannning session scheduled for September, but illness has intervened in one of our families and we'll wait a few days to assess whether that can go on as planned, be postponed and rescheduled, or simply be moved to another location.
There's some great storytelling on tap for the rest of the year:
• Listen to WRGA for Nelle Reagan's Talk of the Town tomorrow at noon. The "Storytellers" will be there (usually some combination of Bob Harris, Delmas Franklin, Gary Greene, and me)
• Our Christy Davis is the director of Cave Screams Ghost Tours the wonderful ghost-story event that is expanding to two-days this year.
• Tellebration will occur on November 21. Watch for details of tellers, venue, etc.

I'm so excited about Cave Screams! If anyone is interested in being a tour guide or storyteller for one or both nights, please let me know. I take good care of my tellers, and I know you guys are the best in Northwest Georgia, so you will definitely get the billing y'all deserve!

PTSW : Flax-golden Tales

I am a storyteller.

I love to gather some folks around me and set out a big delicious lie for them to devour. Yesterday was our quarterly PJ Day, when our fourth-graders receive yet another extrinsic reward, this time for meeting a reading goal. (Sorry, Mike!) It was my turn to tend the rewardees for the day. I told several stories and was pleasantly surprised when a few students, including one very bashful little girl, wanted to regale us with their own tales.

These are the stories I told yeaterday:
"Bud and Jim Go Skinny Dippin'" (The story and the post have some basic similarities, but it ain't the same. Both probably occasionally stray somewhat from the true history of the event.)
"Matilda Stood on a Grave" - my drawn-out and localized version on an old ghost story standard.
"The Tailor" - my version of a quick, cute, little tale specially related to storytellers.
And of course I recited "Jabberwocky". It's expected of me every time I tell stories.

I usually introduce a storytelling time (or a poetry time) by reciting Shel Silverstein's brief introductory poem, "Invitation" from Where the Sidewalk Ends. I learned this one about ten years ago when I was asked to open a Tellebration program here in Rome. Let's start this week with Shel.

Invitation

If you are a dreamer, come in.
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...
If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in!
Come in!

- Shel Silverstein
