Gleaning Facebook: Hillary, the Obamas, and Reactions

One of those sneaky e-mails between Hillary and Huma...

-----------------
Here is Hillary's closing message in this election.
I am excited about our future.
I am excited at the prospect of a presidential role model for American girls.
I am excited that we have an opportunity to end gridlock.
Vote Hillary.
Vote Democratic all the way down the ballot.

Tried us all up?
Jason Jolly
Yes you got it theses two Obama's. Care nothing about you or America if you think they do your as crazy as you look
Grace Baw
The only President since Carter who had good moral standings in the White House, Thank you Mr and Mrs President Obama.

Jane Baird Lathem
Yes, he did.....make health care completely UNAFFORDABLE for many.

Terrell Shaw
Health insurance costs have risen with and without the ACA. With it, I have friends who have access to insurance who wouldn't without it. A great program, partially damaged by the obstruction of state legislatures and Congress. I hope we will move to a single payer option.
Jane Baird Lathem
And that has worked so well in Canada and the U.K.....
Terrell Shaw
Actually, yes it has.

Jane Baird Lathem
Well, I beg to differ. I have a dear friend who was raised in Canada and she has told me many horror stories of family members who could not receive the treatment they heeded but had to wait . Her father was one of those and he almost died because of it! In fact, she told me we had better pray the USA never goes to this system.

Terrell Shaw
Polls show that people in Canada and Great Britain like their health care systems.

Jane Baird Lathem
Well, we know how truthful polls are. Evidently, my friends family was never polled.

Terrell Shaw
Yes, polls are usually pretty accurate in the aggregate, at least.

Jane Baird Lathem
Maybe, but it is hard to argue with first hand experience.

Terrell Shaw
It's usually a mistake to rely on anecdotal rather than scientific evidence.

Jane Baird Lathem
A person who is trying to get medical care doesn't care about scientific evidence....they just care about needing a doctor and not being able to. Frankly, your response is cold. Paula Graves
I have a friend who is from Canada and he and his family loved the healthcare system.

David Shaw
There are actually good solutions to the problem of health insurance access and cost - this isn't it!!! My insurance premium has almost tripled in since the (un)affordable lack-of-care act went into effect. And we have much, much poorer coverage, sky-rocketing out-of-pocket costs and deductibles. This one illegal piece of law is decimating businesses, especially small to mid-sized, and is a major factor in stunting the job market and growth of the economy.

Terrell Shaw
The best solution to me (I know my conservatove friends will disagree) is full national healthcare. If we can covenant to share the cost of police protection, mititary protection, public education, we can can jointly make good healthcare universal. I have supported this for all my adult life and am thrilled that we have begun our way toward it. The ACA was never perfect and it has been stunted by state legislatures, governors, Congress, and, partly, by the SCOTUS. But still my young friend with diabetes CAN get coverage now. Before he could not get coverage at all.
Jane Baird Lathem
Health care needs to be fixed...we agree. But moving toward socialism is certainly not the answer. It doesn't work and never has. We watched the idea take form in Venezuela and it sounded good to the people there. Now there is no medicine available. 1 in 3 persons who enter the hospital die. It all started with "Let's nationalize everything and share the cost and then everything will be wonderful." There are other ways to fix health care.
Suanne Bierman Laqueur
What are some of them? I'm really asking this respectfully because I'm so baffled and disheartened by this issue…

Jane Baird Lathem
Allowing individuals to shop for insurance and force the insurance companies to be more competitive with their prices. Allow going across state borders to purchase insurance. Just a couple of ideas. Now, the insurance companies have us at their mercy. We don't have much choice.
Terrell Shaw
We are all socialists. It's a matter of degree. Social security, medicare, GI Bill, public schools, public highways, public sewage, etc. are all socialist. I am a strong supporter of entrepreneurship, free enterprise, capitalism but tempered by strong environmental, safety, labor rights, and some economic regulations.
Jane Baird Lathem
Once again, we disagree.....I think I will stop here.

Terrell Shaw I'll still love you, despite your errors (JK!!) Cuz. pastedGraphic.png Seriously, this kind of argument is great. I have no prob with arguments over where we should be on the socialism-captialism scale. That is a continuing reasonable argument Americans need to carry on respectfully.

David Haun Yes. Nice conversation. Having socialized healthcare in a democratic country does not mean we are moving toward socialism. This great country of ours can learn from the rest of the world and provide healthcare to everyone at lower cost, and at higher quality. That won't necessarily include insurance companies, which is the fault in our current system. However, there will always be a private system and insurance for those who choose it outside of our eventual single payer system.
