2021 Western Oddysey: Costco, Goodwill, & Mikko Sushi 12/23

Today we knew we'd need to finish up any gift shopping and definitely needed to get gas. The latter required a trip to Costco. The discount warehouse has the least expensive gasoline in town but requires several traffic control employees to manage the long lines of patrons "filling 'er up".  And on Christmas Adam -- Adam came before Eve, you know -- the crowd at the pumps and in the store were astounding. When we got there I realized I'd managed to leave my wallet in the bedroom. Sheila had her credit card and cash and we had Brannon's Costco card, so we were OK.

We spent way too long at this shrine to capitalism tasting samples of various and sundry goodies and being tempted. We came away with a coupla hundred in "bargains", including a huge cheesecake to share with the Carlin clan and two huge fresh pizzas.

We drove back to the San Marcos Goodwill, a small storefront that specializes in a big selection of fairly recent used books, all in great shape. We bought several books for gifts and a couple for ourselves.

This would be our last opportunity to treat our hosts to a meal so we had taken their orders for meals from one of Dan and Renata's favorite restaurants, Mikko Sushi, so we asked Siri for the best route back to Vista Village. Siri showed the 78 all in red so we found a back "blue" round-about route into Vista from the east and soon were there, too early to pick up our large order.

While we waited we visited a quirky little shop, the Public Lemon, where we found some more gifts to purchase.

We picked up the Mikko Sushi order and headed back to Blackbird Drive where Dan, Renata, Brannon, John, kids and we had a delicious dinner, topped off by that Costco cheesecake.

Of course the day also included lots of games requested by Clemmie and Ruth. Toiday the favorite was hide and seek. At one point I "found" -- somehow I was almost always the seeker rather than the hider -- both sisters huddled in a big cloth bag in their closet.

And Sheila got some very nice Susannah time.
