2021 Western Oddysey: Gingerbread House II 12/19

We did not make it to Faith Lutheran this morning. Brannon and the kids had had a late night on Saturday after our evening at Escondido's light festival. Renata watched the Faith service on line while Sheila and I, each on our own device, turned in online to hear Nanci's sermon about the Anunciation at our home church 2000 miles away.

Afterwards I took a walk: Bobolink to Indian Rock to Santa Fe to Civic Center Road, back to Broadway then up Vista Way to Anza -- 11,000 steps plus. Along the way I listened to the "Mueller She Wrote" podcast with AG's guest Peter Strzok. Then her book club discussion of Col. Alex Vindman's book Here Right Matters.

The section of Sante Fe Avenue between Vista Way and Civic Center Road is being redeveloped in an interesting fashion to make it more friendly to pedestrian traffic and to make it more beautiful and environmentally friendly.

The Vietnam memorial along Santa Fe is beautiful and touching with dozens of letters home from soldiers transcribed on floors and walls and a beautiful statue of a soldier reading his mail.

When I arrived at Brannon's I was greeted with shouts of "Grandshaw"! as Brannon and John were loading the kids to head over to "Gamma & Papa's". Clem and Ruth had to take me inside to see the "surprize" they'd made for me: a large "birthday cake" model made from the giant magnetized building set they have.

Sheila helped Clem and Ruthie construct a gingerbread house from a kit that Renata bought for the kids and they had a ball.

Later Sheila and I drove to Vista Village to see the "Winterfest" booths. We'd hoped to find some Christmas gifts to buy, but only bout one small cute covered sugar dish, a period pice for Brannon that might work as a butter dish.

We then visited the Goodwill store but only bought a box of 12x12 scrapbook sheet protectors.

From there we headed to the UMC Church of Vista for their 4 pm Christmas music program. They had a 27 voice choir, a handbell choir, a praise band, a vocal ensemble, a couple of duets, a 19 piece orchestra, and two conductor/composers. The hour and a half program was great fun.

We got back to Blackbird Drive about to find all three granddaughters konked out.

Clem and Ruth were both VERY GROUCHY when they awoke about seven, but cheered eventually. We had a great and silly time eating Danny's grilled Tri-tip beef with white sweet potatoes, cabbage, and cauliflower ... and later gingerbread house!
