Time Machine: Ellijay 1959?

My students will be interested to note my early interest in hats.

Note the Redcedar, the true Christmas Tree -- a tradition we maintained in our family until the purchase of the big fake tree about a decade ago. Our generous friend, Michael J. Burton let us make an annual raid on his property for the perfect redcedar. We finally decided we were decimating the population of the plant in Booger Hollow and gave up the practice. Mama created the matching house robes for debonaire me, Daddy, & David.

Actually there are plenty of red cedars still in Booger Hollow but they need to be pruned and watched so that they grow to a nice uniform size. The hunt is the biggest part of the experience, especially if done as a family. Kids will remember cutting the Christmas tree when they remember nothing else about Christmas. The challenge of making it stand up especially if it is gigantic which was my wont during the old days is also memorable but not always in a good way smile. Of course the scent was the other most favorable factor. I still cherish it.

Our kids loved the "Giddyup Tree" down by the swampy area. Whenever we came for the Christmas tree search we had to stop by the sourwood tree that leaned out from the bank. The kids could climb onto the nearly horizontal trunk, hold on to the upright branch on the end, and Ride'em Cowboy!!!!!

Yep it's still there and ready and raring to go.

The five post-WWII siblings with Daddy in the living room of the parsonage of Watkins Memorial Methodist in Ellijay. We are standing on green shag carpet. Jan and Joan (the pre-WWII siblings) were probably at Asbury College. I guess Mother took the picture. David was born in May 1858 so I would guess this picture is 1959.
