2021 Western Oddysey: Bandelier National Monument 11/18

Under Construction!
I'll post pictures now and add captions gradually as I have time. It is frustrating that Blogger does not put the pictures in the order that I choose them. I'll rearrange later!

When we discovered that opportunities to explore Mesa Verde are somewhat limited due to covid and weather, we decided to substitute a different ancient community. I hope to get to Mesa Verde one of these days, but, oh!, what a spectacle is Bandelier National Monument near Los Alamos, New Mexico. This picture was one of the last of the day. We'd run into a young couple from Long Island, NY on our climb up to "The Alcove" and they agreed to snap our picture and we theirs when we arrived back on the floor of the canyon.   Turned out she is a professional photographer and I think it shows in this iPhone snapshot. Above our heads the dark recess in the cliff is 'The Alcove".

Our first stop of at Bandelier was at this overlook of Frijoles Canyon. We would spend the next few hours exploring below.

We started with a peek in the park store where we picked up the little $2 guidebook Howard Smith suggested we get. Then we took a short tour of the museum in the visitors center to get our bearings.

Printed guide in hand we started up the canyon paved trail.
