Well this is hard: Our City Commission elections are non-partisan, but we know that several of the commissioners and candidates are aligned to one degree or another with one of the two major parties.
I am opposing Republican and Democratic candidates this time. I am supporting Democratic and Republican candidates this time.
It is honestly painful to oppose Democratic candidates. To be honest, it's painful to support Republican candidates.
But this race has only one major issue. None of the candidates has starkly different platforms on the issues that come before the city commission except for one: the sale of our park land for private development. And the folks opposed to that sale include adamant Tea Party folk and strong Bernie Sanders proponents, and everything in between.
So to my Republican friends: Please attend your party's City Commission forum at Fuddruckers at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24. Ask the candidates about their stand. Challenge the incumbents, Democratic and Republican, to explain their support of the Ledbetter proposal to buy this part of our children's legacy for such an extreme bargain.
