The smoker is in place, the meat is ready for it, the Barbecue Master (Robert Bloodworth) is standing by... the 26th annual Independence Celebration on the Levee with the Shaws is about to commence! The Fourth is on the Third this year!

Terrell Shaw, you may legitimately add Emancipation Day which is July 3 celebrated each year in the US Virgin Islands. When we lived on St. Croix it was just as big an event as Independence Day on the 4th. The Danish proclaimed all slaves Free on July 3, 1848. HAPPY EMANCIPATION DAY!!!!!

I wish the patriotic folk of America had organized to go to Washington, cheer the fireworks and, yes, our military folks, and our great nation... and then when the Great Ignoramus began to speak we'd turn our backs by the thousands wearing t-shirts that read "Turn Your Back On Hate". (That's what we did when Trump's base showed up in Rome with their swastika-emblazoned American flags. Wouldn't it be great to take that national?

The meats\'s about ready... and smells good! Sheila let me lick the bowl after she made the banana pudding (Alvin Jackson Sr. take note!) Deborah Shaw Lewis and Naomi Liles Crouse and Sheila are making homemade ice cream. I hope all of you are planning to be here TONIGHT (not the Fourth but the Third!!!). The yard ain't perfect but hope y'all will be comfortable --- if a mite hot. We have cornhole, bocce, croquet, frisbees, hula hoops, and sidewalk chalk for the young and young at heart. Bring a bag chair if you can to supplement the chairs we have.

The desserts were glorious... no Weight-Watcher points were counted that day I assure you. Alvin Jackson Sr. you missed your banana pudding! But I'm awfully glad Sheila thought you'd be there to spur her to make one.  Of course we also had Ginger Whiteis's signature banana pudding. My mouth is watering with the memory!

What a great party! Photobombs tolerated -- even encouraged!

Sheila asked me to put lights on the archway near the levee; I'm so glad I did. It turned into a popular photo booth. Here Lil and three of my adopted daughters pose to commemorate the Independence celebration.

It was another great 4th (on the 3rd) celebration at the Shaw's!

We are blessed with wonderful neighbors on Avenue A. Last night for our Third(!) of July party we had help from several neighbors including Joan Ledbetter and Terry Ledbetter who brought this beautiful bouquet and a wonderful casserole, and they invited some of our friends to park in their driveway. Our neighbor Nena Dake also allowed parking on her property, and our neighbors Jason and Megan Carter volunteered some of their outdoor furniture to add to the seating available for the party.
