From my childhood till her last Christmas in 1992, I loved Christmas at Mama Shaw's. So I was pleased to inherit a few items from her colorful -- let's admit it, gaudy -- collection of holiday decorations. If you look closely at the silvered glass balls that she hung on her trees for so many years, you'll see that the silvery decoration is peeling from the insides of the glass balls. But they still reflect the lights and to my eyes the imperfections are part of the treasured patina.
Besides the dozen or so glass balls we have some white feathered doves that can be attached to the tree and a pair of three foot tall lighted plastic carolers which we display on our front porch as she did from her porch on Main Street in Milstead, Georgia, from the fifties or earlier.
